How to Use Yik Yak Posted: 04 Nov 2021 05:00 PM PDT Yik Yak is a social media application that advertises itself as an anonymous sharing platform, perfect for expressing yourself and forming a community - it gained much traction among college students in the early 2010s.[1] The app just relaunched after shutting down in 2017, and it is available to download on iOS devices.[2] Yik Yak has three primary features: (1) users can create, comment on, and view discussion threads; (2) all posts are anonymous; and, (3) the threads that you, as a user, have access to are within a five-mile radius of your location.[3] This wikiHow article will guide you through various steps and features so you can better understand how to use Yik Yak! [Edit]Getting Started on Yik Yak - Download the app. Open up the App Store on your iOS device and tap the "Search" icon in the lower right corner of your screen. Tap on the upper search bar and type in 'Yik Yak.' Navigate to the app titled "Yik Yak" with the thumbnail of a brown animal on a turquoise background. Download and open the app.
- It is completely free to download!
- Set up your account. After opening the app, tap the "Verify Your Humanity" button.
- Confirm your account. Type in your phone number in the provided box and tap "Send Code." Enter the code that Yik Yak just texted to you and tap "Confirm."
- Tap on the "Community Guardrails" button. Yik Yak provides a page on 'Community Guardrails' that essentially outlines the privacy policy, equity/bullying guidelines, and responsibilities that you have as a user of the app. We will guide you through more safety resources later.
- This button is located below the "Start Tutorial" button (this page pops up directly after you verify your phone number). You can view the policies and guidelines at the guardrails page.
- Complete your tutorial. Tap on the "Start Tutorial" button and then tap through the seven pages. Tap on the orange button at the bottom of your screen to move through these pages.
- Give Yik Yak access to your location. Because of the 5-mile radius feature, you must allow Yik Yak to access your location. Do this by filling out the pop-up window after you finish the tutorial.
- We suggest choosing "Allow While Using App" so Yik Yak only asks you this once.
[Edit]Navigating the Yik Yak Interface - View the main posts page. The home page of the app displays the most recent Yaks - or, posts - by anonymous people in your 'herd' (Yik Yak's term for the people within a 5-mile radius). The top post is always the most recent, but simply scroll down to look at previous posts.
- Navigate between "New" and "Hot" Yaks. These two sections have corresponding buttons at the top of your screen. Yik Yak will default to "New," but simply tap on the "Hot" button to view those Yaks.
- "New" refers to the newest posts in your herd. "Hot" refers to posts that have gained more traction and popularity within your herd.
- Refresh the page. To view any new posts, simply scroll up on the home page (that is, drag your finger from top to bottom).
- View Comments on Yaks. If a Yak has comments, there will be turquoise text underneath the post, detailing the number of comments it has. Tap on this text to view the comments.
- Access the side menu. Tap the rectangular icon with grey dots in the lower right corner. This is where you can find the tutorial ("How Yik Yak Works" button), the "Community Guardrails" button, a map with your herd radius, and additional Yik Yak features below those three buttons.
- View other Yak categories. In addition to "New" and "Hot" Yaks, there are three other categories of Yaks that you can access through the side menu: "Local Top Yaks," "Nationwide Top Yaks," and "Nationwide Hot Yaks." Just tap on each label to view!
[Edit]Posting and Responding to Yaks - Write a Yak. Tap on the pencil icon in the lower right corner. Type out your Yak here!
- Take note that your Yak must be 200 characters or less.
- Post a Yak. Tap on the "Ready to Send" button once you are ready to post. Next, swipe up on your screen (there will be instructions directing you to do so). Your Yak is now live!
- Comment on a Yak. Tap on the grey bar beneath the Yak labeled 'Comment.' The app will then send you to a new page with your keyboard. Write out your comment and press 'Send' next to the message - your comment is now live!
- 'Upvote' a Yak. If you particularly like a Yak, tap on the up arrow directly above the displayed number of points (to the right of the Yak). This action is called 'upvoting' a Yak.
- Upvotes are how Yaks gain popularity - each upvote adds a point to the overall user rating number.[4]
- 'Downvote' a Yak. If you do not like a Yak, tap on the down arrow directly below the displayed number of points. 'Downvoting' will decrease the overall user rating of a Yak.[5]
- If a Yak reaches below -5, the post will automatically delete.
- View your 'Yakarma.' Yakarma are points that you earn for interacting with Yik Yak. You may earn points through commenting, yakking (that is, posting), and gaining upvotes (we will explain what this is later!). You can always see your Yakarma score in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Your Yakarma is only visible to yourself, and you start with 100 points.
[Edit]Utilizing Yik Yak's Resources - Access Yik Yak's resources. Yik Yak has plenty of mental health and safety resources if you ever find a post harmful or need extra guidance on general life safety. There are three main resources all located in the side menu (other than the Community Guardrails, which you can find information on earlier in the article).
- Tap on the 'Stay Safe Resources' tab in the side menu. This displays various guidance on staying safe outside of the app, including information about ride-sharing, bullying, substance consumption, and more.
- Tap on the 'Mental Health Resources' tab in the side menu. This displays information on general mental health guidance, as well as other resources available to you.
- Turn on 'Cuss Buster.' First, tap on the 'More Options' tab in the side menu. Next, tap on the 'Cuss Buster' button at the top of your screen. This will hide any inappropriate language in Yaks and comments.

How to Tame an Ocelot in Minecraft Posted: 04 Nov 2021 01:00 AM PDT An ocelot is a shy, passive mob in the game of Minecraft. Ocelots are jungle biome creatures. These creatures do not attack players, although they will attack chickens to eat. Prior to Java Edition 1.14, and Bedrock Edition 1.8, feeding an ocelot raw fish would tame it and turn it into a cat. In newer versions of Minecraft, feeding an ocelot no longer turns it into a cat that can be kept as a pet. However, you can find stray cats in villages that can be tamed and kept as pets in the same manner. - Craft a fishing rod. A fishing rod can be made with 3 sticks and 2 string which you can get from killing spiders. In the crafting table, place the sticks diagonally from top left to the bottom right and place the string to the left vertically.
- Go fishing. Raw fish can be obtained by fishing. Put the fishing rod in your toolbar and equip it by pressing the corresponding number on the keyboard (or by pressing the right and left shoulder buttons on game consoles). Stand next to a body of water and click or press the right trigger button to cast a line. Click or press the right trigger button again when you see the bobber sink. You'll need at least five fish and maybe up to 20, to lure the ocelot to you.
- Do not cook the fish. Ocelots are only attracted by raw fish.
- Locate an ocelot. Ocelots are found in jungle biomes. They are yellow with black spots.
- In the newest version of Minecraft, taming an ocelot no longer turns it into a cat that you can keep as a pet. However, you can find stray cats in villages that can be tamed and kept as a pet. Cats can be tamed using these same steps.[1]
- Wait for the ocelot or cat to approach you. This is an absolute requirement or taming the ocelot will not occur––if you try to approach the ocelot or cat, it'll assume you're chasing it and take off. Moreover, trapping or cornering an ocelot will not result in taming.
- The ocelot will possibly come to you when you are holding a raw fish.
- Do not be threatening in any way.
- Be in an area that allows for plenty of escape for the ocelot. Your character must be situated somewhere that has a 7x7 minimum horizontal block area. This will allow the ocelot to feel safe rather than trapped.
- Taming will not take place if hostile mobs are attacking at the same time. And never have chickens or other animals around.
- Equip the raw fish. Place the raw fish in your toolbar and equip it by pressing the corresponding number on your keyboard or pressing the right and left trigger shoulder buttons on your controller.
- Get close to the ocelot with great care and stealth. The ocelot will be easily frightened away.
- Walk at normal speed if you need to move nearer to keep apace with the ocelot, but don't get too close while moving. Only use walking to get nearer, then cease moving.
- Never look directly at an ocelot when attempting to tame it. This means keeping the crosshairs off it.
- Wait for an approach. If an ocelot turns around and faces you, this may be an opportunity for it to approach you.
- Stand still if possible. This is the best way to attract the ocelot.
- If you want to, try sneaking––this might work without disturbing the ocelot. (Try holding sneak, while the mouse sensitivity is set to yawn.)
- Stay still when the ocelot is within 5 blocks of you. Keep holding the raw fish without moving or looking directly at the ocelot.
- Wait for the ocelot to stare at your character and approach timidly. If the conditions are right, the ocelot will slowly walk towards you.
- Place the crosshair on the ocelot or cat and feed it the raw fish. You can feed it by right-clicking or pressing the left trigger button on your controller.
- Use quick repeated right-clicks without jerking the camera or moving. Any movement can scare away the ocelot before it is tamed
- Repeat the feeding until you see hearts over the ocelot. When you see hearts appear over the ocelot or cat, it has been successfully tamed. It may take a few tries before you have successfully tamed an ocelot or cat.
- A tamed ocelot will not flee the player.
- A tamed cat ceases to be afraid of humans. It will meow and purr quite often. It will follow you around and sit on demand (simply right-click or press the left trigger button).
- Cats will sit on everything, including chests, which can be a nuisance as the chest won't open until the cat gets off it!
- Both cats and ocelots can ward off creepers.
- Taming two ocelots or cats in close proximity will cause them to breed.
- If your character dies, and the cat does not. The cat will teleport to your bed or spawn with you.
- It can take quite a few tries to tame an ocelot or cat. Getting impatient will only cause you to chase or try to trap the ocelot, both of which will not result in taming. This is an exercise in patience.
- Cats like to roam a lot and won't sit for long. They may be tempted to attack chickens, wander off or get into mischief.
- If you look at an ocelot directly through transparent blocks, it will not sprint away. This may help you to find a taming method.
- It is easier to tame ocelots in Creative mode.
- If you really don't have the patience to tame two cats, you can use a spawn ocelot egg. Point the crosshairs at your cat and press spawn. You will then get a kitten.
- Don't move, and stay very still!
- Never chase an ocelot when trying to tame it; that will only make it run away from you. Just let the ocelot approach you.
- Ocelots and cats can be tamed with any fish, as long as it is raw.
- Go out with cats during the day and at the surface. Use wolves and cats to mine, or at night.
[Edit]Warnings - Only adult cats can swim; kittens (born of two cats) sink and drown quickly. Cats will follow your character into water, so if you have kittens, be vigilant not to take them.
- Cats aren't that worried about danger, and as such, you can lose your newly tamed cat if care is not taken. For example, cats can walk too close to cacti and be speared. They can walk too close to flame or lava and be burned. They can also walk through fights, oblivious, and be hit by arrows or attacks.
- Be careful when hitting things; if you hit your cat by accident, it may die.
- It is not advisable to keep chickens in an enclosure in the jungle biome unless you want to attract ocelots. They will do their best to take your chickens!
