How to Make a Tissue Pom Pom Carnation

Feeling crafty? If you have some basic items on hand, you can make a pompom "Carnation" bouquet! It's a very cool project, and fun to do.

  1. Gather your supplies together. You will need paper tissue napkins, scissors, pipe cleaners (aka "fuzzy wire"), a stapler, some florist tape and a pair of scissors.
  2. Fold a paper tissue napkin into fourths.
  3. Lay two pipe cleaners across the folded napkin diagonally.
  4. Staple the pipe cleaners in place using at least two staples. Crossing the staples is helpful in holding these in place long term.
  5. Twist the pipe cleaners together to form a stem.
  6. Cut the corners of the napkin away to create a circle with all "raw" (no folds left) edges.
  7. Clip the outer edge of the napkin circle to create "tabs" or "teeth" or "flaps".
  8. Lift the top layer of tissue and scrunch it together into a point of sorts.
  9. Lift the next layer of tissue and crumple/scrunch it up and around the first layer. Continue crumpling/scrunching layer by layer until you have only the bottom layer of tissue napkin left.
  10. Fold or wrap the bottom layer of tissue down and around the pipe cleaner stem.
  11. Cut a length of florist tape (around 20 inches is fine) and wrap the bottom layer of tissue to the pipe cleaner stem.
    Continue wrapping snuggly to the end of your pipe cleaner wires. Repeat with a second layer if you want a little extra stiffness to your stem.
  12. Place completed "carnation" stems in a vase to hold them while you complete as many more as you need.

One of the main benefits of eating fish, especially certain varieties, is the amount of omega-3 they contain. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to brain development and overall health, so knowing how to maximize your intake through the proper selection of fish is an important component of improving your diet. This article provides information on why you should take in more omega-3, how to choose high omega-3 fish, and how to get the most out of your fish choices.

  1. Know your omega-3 needs. In basic terms, omega-3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that is essential to numerous functions throughout the body. It aids in brain development and functioning, and has overall anti-inflammatory properties. It helps lubricate your arteries to inhibit plaque buildup and can help treat or prevent conditions including heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, and arrhythmia.[1][2]

    • The current recommended intake of omega-3 for women is 1.1 g / day, and 1.6 g / day for men. However, increased levels of 2-3 g / day seem to have additional benefits.[3]
  2. Choose cold-water, fatty fish. The average amount of omega-3 in a variety of fish depends upon its physiology, diet, and environment. Fish that consume algae (or other fish that eat it), which is high in DHA (a component of omega-3), and store it in fat needed as insulation from cold waters, are the best storehouses of omega-3.[4]

  3. Mix in other seafood as well. You should strive to eat 8-12 oz of high omega-3 fish a week. Adding in a variety of seafood will contribute additional omega-3 and help keep your dining experience from becoming too predictable and dull. Depending on calorie needs, one serving can be 4-6 oz.[5]

  4. Know how your fish is raised and caught. You are what you eat, and so are fish. (They also "are" where they live.)     • If possible, buy your fish from someone who can tell you about where it came from and when and how it was caught. It doesn't have to be a small, specialty shop; that person behind the mega-supermarket counter should be able to answer some of your questions.
    • Even if you aren't as concerned about sustainable fishing practices as you probably should be, fish caught in this manner are more likely to have been examined individually to determine their quality.
  5. Limit your ingestion of mercury and other toxins. One of the major reasons to know where your fish comes from is to arm yourself with better information about the potential for higher toxin levels. PCB, for instance, an industrial pollutant believed to be a carcinogen, is found in higher levels in farmed salmon than in wild-caught.[6]

    • Mercury is known to hamper brain development in fetuses and children and impact brain function in adults. Pregnant women in particular are advised to limit their intake of fish varieties with higher mercury levels, usually to 12 ounces (2-3 servings) per week -- and even less for highest-level fish like shark and swordfish.
    • Large predatory fish, those that eat large amounts of other fish that themselves consume smaller amounts of mercury, are the biggest culprits. Therefore, even though they are good sources of omega-3, you should be cautious about overconsumption of varieties like shark, swordfish, tilefish, king mackerel, marlin, orange roughy, and bluefin tuna. Canned albacore tuna is in the medium range of mercury amounts, while canned light tuna has low amounts.[7]

  1. Bring your omega-3 and omega-6 into better balance. Omega-6 is another polyunsaturated fatty acid, found in vegetable oils like corn, cottonseed, soybean, safflower, and sunflower.     • A 1:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 would be excellent, but even a 2-4:1 ratio is better than the average American's diet.
    • To improve your ratio, eat more fish and less fried fast foods, potato chips, cookies, donuts, etc.
  2. Prepare fish wisely. Choosing the right kind of fish is the first step. Preparing it in a way that preserves omega-3 amounts without introducing excessive unhealthy fats or sodium (while also tasting delicious) is an important next step for regular fish consumption.

    • Bake or grill your fish instead of frying, which adds undesirable omega-6 to your omega-3.

    • Many people recoil at the thought of anchovies, but they are very high in omega-3 and blend easily into many dishes. Finely chopped anchovies practically melt into sauces, for instance, and impart a savory and umami -- not fishy -- flavor. Try adding them to your pasta sauce next time.[11]
    • Algae isn't fish, but it is where much of the omega-3 in fish comes from. Edible algae like seaweed or kelp are high in DHA, one of the component parts of omega-3. Cut out the middleman every once in a while, or better yet, pair a high omega-3 fish with its favorite food on your plate.[12]
  4. Eat other high omega-3 foods as well. Fish-based omega-3 contains DHA and EPA, both of which have demonstrated health benefits. The benefits of non-fish based omega-3 foods, which contain ALA, are less definitive but strongly indicative. 2.2-4.4 g of ALA is recommended for a 2,000 kcal/day diet.[13]

    • Good sources of ALA-based omega-3 include soybeans, canola, walnuts, flaxseeds, and ALA-enriched foods like eggs and occasionally peanut butter (among other foods).[14]
  5. Consider omega-3 supplements. If you have difficulty consuming enough omega-3 rich foods, have medical conditions that would benefit from higher omega-3 consumption, are pregnant, or are just interested in increasing your omega-3, talk to your healthcare professional about supplements.

    • Omega-3 supplements most often come in the form of fish oil caplets. Some people complain that these have an unpleasant, fishy aftertaste, but there are a wide variety of fish oil options (with a wide variation in quality control), so do some research and find one that works for you.[15]
    • Most people have to worry about too little omega-3, but overconsumption of omega-3 can be a problem for some, as it can cause bleeding problems. Do not consume an average of more than 3 grams per day without consulting your physician.[16]

Whether you're new to Goodreads or have been active on the site for a while, you might not realize that you can set up a profile there. You can create and manage your own profile page to show to outside viewers more about you. This article will show you how to manage your public information on Goodreads.

  1. Open up and log in to the Goodreads website.

  2. Navigate to your profile page. Hover over your profile icon in the top right corner and click "View Profile". This will give you your profile page. However, you need to take it one more step to edit your profile.

  3. Locate and click the "(edit profile)" link. It is located next to your name near the top navigation bar near the top of the page. Click this link will get you to your editable profile data page.

EditName Fields

  1. Fill in the name fields. Although the First name field is mandatory for all situations, they also include spots for your middle name and last name (if you'd like to give them out to the public and/or people who are friends with you on Goodreads).

  2. Select how you want your name displayed. The display name drop-down box shows you two options: first-name last-name or last-name first-name. If you only have your first name field filled out, it'll default to only the one and the second won't be able to be displayed at all.

    • If you've selected to show your middle name, there will be an additional field in the drop down that lists your first name followed by your middle name followed by your last name that you can pick.
  3. Click a radio checkbox between the two options below the "Show my last name to" label. Your choices include "Anyone (including search engines)" and (just Goodreads) "Friends". Most people want to set this to just "friends" for privacy's sake, but you have to choose who you want to see this data.

  4. Customize or create a username. This is helpful for those who want their own username to be given out on their profile page or personal URL. Type in your username into the "User Name" field.

  5. Include a user image. If you have a picture of yourself reading, go ahead and insert it. Save the picture to your computer; whether it's from a digital camera, smartphone camera or some scanned in photo from a current picture, make sure you can access it.

    • Avoid illegally downloading images from the web without consent of the creator; if you can't find an image of yourself to use, try freely licensed images, like ones under appropriate Creative Commons licenses. Just make sure you stick to the licensing requirements (for example, providing attribution if required).

  1. Select your Gender in the drop-down box.

  2. Select your country from the drop-down box below the zip code field. Setting them to United States will hide the city and state box.

  3. Type in your zip-code into the zip code field. Recognize that zip codes in the US are the only ones that will work.[1]

  4. Select the audience to which your location is shown. You have three choices. "Everyone" will show your location to everyone who has your custom personalized URL, "Friends" will give out this information to only the friends you've made on Goodreads, and "No one" will make this information private to you only.

EditDate of Birth and Age

  1. Fill out your date of birth if you'd like. Keep the drop-down boxes blank to avoid displaying this information if desired.[2]The age will be determined by the date you've filled in, within these boxes of your date of birth.

    • If you are under age 18, regardless of what you set your audiences to be, the Goodreads system keeps your profile private. This is so that little to no information is given to those who don't have your URL, to protect your privacy.
  2. Fill out the privacy drop-down. The "age and birthday privacy" drop-down will give you several options for which items to show to which part of your audience.

EditMiscellaneous Information About Yourself

  1. Fill out the "My Web Site" if you have a website or blog you want to share.

  2. Type in your interests in life into the "My Interests" field. Follow each term with a comma and a space.

  3. Describe the types/genres of books you'd like to read. Type this information into the "What Kind of Books Do You Like to Read?" box, following each term or phrase with a comma and a space.

  4. Describe yourself in the "About Me" section. What you share is up to you! You can use some HTML formatting in there (such as to mention books in italics).

  5. Click the "Save Profile Settings" button to save your work thus far.

EditPreviewing Your Work

  1. Preview your changes once you are finished with this. Make sure to preview them on your account, as well as by seeing what your public image of your page looks like to the outside observer.

  • As you click to create your custom profile user name, you might want to stop and save the page there, until you get a working custom profile name. While most often this will yield a working result, sometimes the username will be taken and you'll have to go back and try for another one. You can always come back to fill out the remainder of the fields later, after you've found a workable solution.
