How to Talk to Your Spouse About Having Children

Posted: 22 Mar 2017 05:00 PM PDT

The decision to have children is huge and it is not always easy to bring up in a relationship. Direct, honest, and respectful communication is the best option, but even if you both want to start a family, you will need to discuss readiness factors. If it turns out that your partner does not want kids now or in the future, then you may need to consider other options, such as not having children or seeking marriage counseling.

EditSteps

EditTalking to Your Partner

  1. Think about your own reasons for wanting to have kids. Before you strike up a conversation you're your spouse about having kids, take some time to examine your own reasons for wanting to have kids.[1] Write them out in as much detail as possible to help you prepare for a conversation with your spouse.
Talk to Your Spouse About Having Children Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • Consider whether your motivation is internal or external. Do you want to have kids because you think your friends and family expect you to do so? Or do you have an internal desire to have kids? How can you tell that your desire is rooted in yourself?[2]
  2. Find a good time to talk. Don't approach your spouse at the end of a stressful day or when he or she is distracted. Instead, plan your conversation for a time when you and your spouse are relaxed and can devote your full attention to the matter.[3]

    • For example, you might plan to talk on Saturday morning after you have had breakfast. Make sure that you sit down face to face and put away all distractions (cell phones, laptops, etc.) when you have your conversation.
  3. Say how you feel. Be honest and tell your partner why you want to have kids. Use the notes that you made to help you explain point-by-point why having children is important to you and why you want to do it now. State your case in a calm, clear voice and be as detailed as possible about your reasons.

  4. Ask your partner what concerns he or she has. If your partner is not ready to have children, then it is important for you to hear about the concerns that he or she has about the process. Ask your partner to share his or her concerns with you and to be as honest as possible.[4]

  5. Listen with an open mind. Even if your partner is 100% against having children, it is important for you to listen to your partner with an open mind and to show that you respect his or her desires.[5] Make sure that you maintain eye contact, nod to show that you are listening, and ask questions if your partner says anything that you do not understand.
Talk to Your Spouse About Having Children Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • If your partner is in favor of having kids, then you will need to talk about your readiness and determine if there is anything that you need to do before you get started.

EditDiscussing Your Readiness to Have Kids

  1. Think about your health. Having children requires you and your spouse to be in good physical condition. Take some time to consider how healthy you are and what you can do to improve on your health before trying to become pregnant.[6]
Talk to Your Spouse About Having Children Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • For example, if you smoke or your partner smokes, then take steps to quit smoking. If you and your partner are overweight, then take steps to lose weight. Try to pinpoint your health challenges and identify ways that you can improve your health.
  2. Examine the strength of your relationship. Before you expand your family, you and your partner should take time to work out any challenges in your relationship. Having children can put a strain on both of you and if you have issues, then it is in your future child's best interest to try to find a solutions to these issues.[7]
Talk to Your Spouse About Having Children Step 7.jpg
    • For example, if you tend to argue now and then about minor things, then work on improving your communication with your partner. If your issues are larger than small arguments now and then, you may want to consider marriage counseling to help you resolve problems before trying to have a child.
  3. Evaluate your finances. Raising a child is expensive, so it is important to consider your ability to provide things like a crib, clothing, food, and toys. If you are struggling with your finances, then you may want to take some time to improve your situation and save a bit of money before you start trying for a baby.[8]
Talk to Your Spouse About Having Children Step 8.jpg
  4. Compare your ideas about how to raise a child. Raising a child also requires lots of teamwork between you and your spouse, so you should be on the same page regarding how you will raise your child. Talk about the values that you and your spouse share and how you can overcome disagreements about values.[9]
Talk to Your Spouse About Having Children Step 9.jpg
    • For example, do you and your spouse share the same ideas about how to discipline your child? Can you agree on what moral values to instill in your child? Do either of you have a strong religious preference?
  5. Consider the length of your relationship. Longer relationships tend to have more stability and this is important for your future child. Consider how long you and your spouse have been together and if your relationship is stable enough for a child. It is a good idea to wait until you have been together for at least one year before deciding to have a child together.[10]

EditMoving Forward with Your Partner

  1. Try to be patient if your spouse wants to wait. Even after you share your feelings with your spouse, there is a possibility that he or she may still not feel ready to have kids. In this case, it is important to be respectful of your spouse's wishes and try not to pressure him or her.[11]
    • Pressuring your spouse about having kids is unlikely to make him or her think differently about the choice. In fact, it may even cause serious problems for your relationship.
  2. Remember that having children may challenge your relationship. Children cannot fix a relationship, but some people think that having children will do just that. If you are considering children as a way to fix the relationship between you and your partner, then you should not have children.[12]
Talk to Your Spouse About Having Children Step 12.jpg
  3. Consider what your life would be like without children. Many people opt to live without children and lead happy, rewarding lives. Consider whether you and your spouse could be happy without adding children to your relationship.
Talk to Your Spouse About Having Children Step 13.jpg
    • One way to determine if a life without children will cause you regret is to imagine your future self and consider whether or not you will regret not having children.[13]
    • Try to think about how you might spend your time and money if you never have kids. What would you do with the spare time, money, and energy that you would have spent on children?
  4. See a therapist for help. If you and your partner cannot come to an agreement about having kids and it is causing problems in your marriage, then consider seeking treatment from a marriage counselor. You may also consider seeing a counselor on your own for help dealing with your feelings about desiring children when your spouse does not.

How to Start an Affiliate Marketing Business

Posted: 22 Mar 2017 09:00 AM PDT

Affiliate marketing gives you the opportunity to earn a commission by selling products or services offered by other companies. It's a great way to supplement your income from the convenience of your own home. Fortunately, it's also easy to become an affiliate for companies that are household names.

EditSteps

EditBecoming an Affiliate

  1. Sell what you know. To start, you should stick to selling products or services that you're familiar with. Online marketers call this process "picking your niche."
    Sell Baseball Cards Step 5.jpg
[1] You should select a niche that represents your current interests or your occupation.
    • For example, if you're an expert at interior decorating, it makes more sense to sell comforter sets than it does to sell automotive parts. You'll do a much better job with your individual marketing efforts if you stick to selling what you know.
  2. Start a website relevant to your niche. Before becoming an affiliate, many companies will want to know the URL of the website that you'll use to sell their products. They do this because they want to ensure that the content on the website won't hurt the company's reputation.
Start an Affiliate Marketing Business Step 5.jpg
    • It's easy to start a website these days thanks to sites like WordPress.com.[2]
    • Be sure to add content to your website that isn't "salesy." You want your site to come across as an authority in your niche.[3]
  3. Research affliate programs. Find an affiliate program that offers products or services in your niche.
Start an Affiliate Marketing Business Step 1.jpg
    • Amazon sells just about everything, so it's likely that your niche includes products sold on Amazon. That's a good place to start if you're looking to get into affiliate marketing.[4]
    • Commission Junction is another great option because it allows you to become an affiliate for countless companies that you already know about (e.g., Overstock, Office Depot, Boscov's, and many others).[5]
    • Clickbank is yet another option that many affiliate marketers like. That's because the commissions from companies on that site can be very lucrative.[6]
  4. Join an affiliate program. It's almost always free of charge to join an affiliate program.
Start an Affiliate Marketing Business Step 2.jpg
    • In fact, if you're being asked for a credit card number just to become an affiliate, you might be getting scammed. Most reputable companies that offer affiliate programs allow people to become affiliates free of charge.
    • You will, however, be asked for bank account or PayPal information. Keep in mind, that's not so that the company can take money away from you, but so that it can pay you the commission you earned with successful sales.
    • You will be asked for the URL of your website in some cases. Just provide the URL of the website that you created above.

EditMarketing Products on Your Website

  1. Add affiliate links in your content. One great way to get paid a commission without appearing to sell anything is add affiliate links within your content. That way, when people click on the link, they're taken to the company site and, if they buy, you'll earn a commission.
Start an Affiliate Marketing Business Step 3.jpg
    • For example, if you're writing about decor that includes purple comforters, make the phrase "purple comforters" a link to Amazon's site that shows people only comforters that are offered in purple. Your readers can browse through Amazon's offerings and maybe purchase an item that they like.
    • Good news: Companies make it very easy to get links to their site. The way that you get those links varies from company to company, but it's usually very easy to find a link to the product or products that you're looking for.
  2. Include visual ads in your sidebar. Your website, like most websites, probably has a sidebar. That's a great place to include visual ads for products relevant to your niche.
Start Your Own Business on the Internet Step 1Bullet2.jpg
    • Once again, you'll find that companies with affiliate programs make it very easy for you to obtain the images and links you need to get your visitors back to their sites. It's almost always just as easy as copying and pasting code into your sidebar.
  3. Continue producing content relevant to your niche. You want to keep people coming back to your website, don't you? If so, then you need to keep on producing original content that's of value to your visitors. That's called "content marketing" by digital marketers.[7]
Start an Affiliate Marketing Business Step 4.jpg
    • Good content keeps visitors coming back. That means that they might eventually click on your affiliate links and purchase something.
    • You can also use your content to include affiliate links as mentioned above. The more content you produce, the more affiliate links you have. The law of averages eventually kicks in and you'll start selling.
  4. Use analytics to measure your success. You can think of analytics as information about what you're selling, how you sold it, and to whom you sold it. [8] Fortunately, most affiliate marketing sites offer helpful analytics so you can get an idea about what's working well for you.
Start Your Own Business on the Internet Step 2Bullet2.jpg
    • If you find that one type of product sells well on your site, produce content that gives you the opportunity to market it even more.
    • Use Google Analytics to gain an understanding of the demographics of your visitors. Tailor your content marketing efforts to people in that demographic.
    • Pay attention to your posts that get the most visitors. If you find that some posts are getting significantly more hits than the others, consider adding additional affiliate links to them.
    • Focus on what works, eliminate what doesn't. The analytics provided by your company will tell you which types of ads are working and which ones aren't. Use more of the ads that are working and eliminate the ones that aren't.

EditManaging Your Business

  1. Prepare for taxes. If you make money via affiliate marketing, you can be sure that you're going to have to pay taxes on that income. At the beginning of each year, your partner companies should send you a 1099 tax form. If they don't, you're still required to report the income to the IRS.
File Taxes for a Deceased Person Step 9.jpg
    • If you're running your affiliate marketing business as a sole proprietor or LLC, you'll report 1099 income on Schedule C - Profit or Loss from Business.[9]
    • If you're running your business as an S or C corporation, you'll report the income on Schedule K-1.[10]
  2. Expand your business. Your business is likely to do one of two things: expand or contract. That's why you should always be striving for growth, otherwise your business will shrink and provide you with diminishing returns.
Start a Small Restaurant or Coffee Shop Step 6 Version 3.jpg
    • Look for new products that you think you can market online. Browse through various affiliate sites. Look for new businesses that have recently welcomed affiliates and, if they're offering something you think you can market well, partner up with them.
    • Promote your business constantly online. Use social media, email, and other channels to promote your business so that people keep coming back and looking for great deals on the products and services that you're marketing.
  3. Delegate routine tasks. Once your business takes off, it's time for you to focus on how to grow your business while delegating routine tasks to others. It will cost you some money in labor expense, but the investment is worth it if it allows you to come up with new ways to promote your affiliate marketing business and build it even further.
Start a Small Restaurant or Coffee Shop Step 18.jpg
  4. Automate what you can. There are plenty of digital marketing tools available.[11] Again, some of them will require you to make an investment, but if it gives you more free time to build your business, then the return on investment should be positive.
Start Your Own Business Step 22 Version 2.jpg
    • Focus on creating a long-term strategy for your business while your tools and employees handle routine, day-to-day tasks. That way, you can handle "big picture" responsibilities to ensure that your business continues to grow.

EditWarnings

  • Avoid using illegal topics.
  • Avoid black hat SEO.
