How to Buy Acidophilus

Posted: 10 Jul 2016 05:00 PM PDT

Acidophilus (Lactobacillus or L. acidophilus) is a probiotic, or "good bacteria" that helps break down food in your colon. Studies show that it can curb the growth of disease-causing pathogens in the digestive tract, manage gastrointestinal conditions, reduce antibiotic-induced diarrhea, aid digestion, and help with other conditions like lung infections or skin issues.[1] Acidophilus is found naturally in yogurt, but it also can be purchased as a supplement at health food stores, pharmacies or online vitamin distributors. But because some manufacturers advertise their products inaccurately, it's important to know what to look for when buying probiotics.[2]

EditSteps

EditUnderstanding How to Buy Acidophilus Supplements

  1. Learn what acidophilus is and what it's used for. This naturally occurring "good bacteria" helps to break down food in your colon and protect against "bad bacteria." Though you can ingest it through food, you can't get adequate amounts that way. For the best results, you should take a supplement as well to help with various GI issues and other conditions. Though there are many types, Lactobacillus acidophilus is the most commonly used probiotic.[3] It's used to treat many different conditions, including:[4]

    • Traveler's diarrhea
    • Antibiotic associated diarrhea
    • Irritable bowel syndrome
    • Inflammatory bowel disease
    • Vaginal infections
    • Research is currently being conducted to see if probiotics are effective in treating lactose intolerance and helping the immune system.[5]
  2. Talk to your doctor about using acidophilus. If you're using acidophilus as a general dietary supplement, you should take 1 to 4 billion CFU (colony forming units) per day.[6] The packaging of reliable suppliers will let you know the strength of the probiotic supplements you buy. However, your doctor may prescribe smaller or larger doses if acidophilus is being used to treat a specific condition — yeast infections, for example.[7] When using to treat a specific condition, follow your doctor's recommended dosage rather than general dosage recommendations.
Buy Acidophilus Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • Acidophilus can be problematic if you have a pre-existing gastro-intestinal condition, like short bowel syndrome.[8] Discuss your options with your doctor.
    • Be careful about using it with children or infants, as bacteria can get into the blood, causing sepsis. It can also cause diarrhea and dehydration, or raise the child's likelihood of developing lactose intolerance.
  3. Be prepared for mild side effects.[9] The lactose intolerant may react to acidophilus because the manufacturing process can leave small amounts of lactose in the final product. However, the most common side effect is bloating and gas, though it usually tapers off with continued use.
Buy Acidophilus Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • Be aware that antibiotics can kill off the acidophilus bacteria, rendering it ineffective. Talk to your doctor about your antibiotic use. To be safe, it's best to give yourself at least a 2 hour window before and after taking an antibiotic.
    • In rare cases, it can cause arthritis, arterial blockage, diarrhea, esophageal disease, heart, liver, or skin problems, or vaginal discomfort.
    • Some people are just allergic to the bacteria itself. If you suffer an allergic reaction, avoid all products from the Lactobacillaceae family of bacteria.
  4. Buy acidophilus from a reputable supplier. Because probiotics are considered dietary supplements, the FDA does not have to approve these products. They do, however, loosely regulate them. There are standards for the manufacturing of dietary supplements, and the FDA may periodically check the facilities.[10] Still, there's a chance that your dietary supplement is contaminated or does not actually contain what it claims to.[11][12] It's important to buy probiotic supplements from a reputable supplier who guarantees its products.
Buy Acidophilus Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • Keep cold supplements cold. Remember that if a supplement is meant to be refrigerated, then it must stay that way. Millions of probiotics die when the supplement is left at room temperature.
  5. Look for independent quality guarantees. A reputable manufacturer will allow an independent organization like U.S. Pharmacopeia, NSF international or Consumerlab.com to test their product. These seals of approval do not necessarily guarantee safety or effectiveness. However, they do ensure that the products actually contain what they claims to, and that they're not contaminated.[13]
Buy Acidophilus Step 5 Version 2.jpg
  6. Check the packaging for a CFU count guarantee.[14] Each acidophilus supplement should come with a CFU (Colony Forming Units) count guarantee, which is based on the count at the time of manufacturing. Most acidophilus supplements contain between 1 to 2 billion CFU. Do not purchase products without CFU count guarantees.
    Buy Acidophilus Step 6.jpg
  7. Ensure the acidophilus is correctly handled. Acidophilus supplements contain live bacteria, so they should be stored and transported in cool conditions. The ideal temperature is below 40 degrees F (4.5 degrees C).[15] This may be hard to verify, but it is important information to consider.
    Buy Acidophilus Step 7.jpg
    • If the label doesn't require you to refrigerate the product, you probably don't have a good product on your hands. Real acidophilus supplements need refrigeration.
    • Also check the label for an expiration date. Reputable stores generally pull all expired products from stock.
  8. Check the ingredients in the acidophilus supplement. Some supplement manufacturers water down their product by mixing slow-growing acidophilus with other fast-growing bacteria. This increases the CFU count and makes it appear like a more effective product to consumers. Examples of fast-growing bacteria additions include other strains of Lactobacillus and Bacillus coagulants.[16] Although these may have some research behind them, most studies use Lactobacillus acidophilus.
    Buy Acidophilus Step 8.jpg
    • For best results, look for an acidophilus supplement that contains only acidophilus.
    • The probiotic may be listed as acidophilus, lactobacillus or l. acidophilus.

EditUsing Different Types of Acidophilus Supplements

  1. Consider a variety of acidophilus supplements. Acidophilus is naturally produced in the body, and is normally found in the mouth, small intestine, and vagina.[17] However, you can supplement natural probiotic production with a variety of products — you don't have to restrict yourself to a single form! Lactobacillus supplements are available as pills, powders, or enriched foods at most health food stores, pharmacies or online vitamin distributors.[18]
    Buy Acidophilus Step 9.jpg
  2. Take acidophilus capsules. Capsules are the most popular way to take acidophilus because you can swallow the pills with water. The general recommended dosage is 1 to 2 capsules taken once a day. The capsules usually have a strength of 1 to 2 billion CFU, so you should get 1 to 4 billion CFU per day. [19]
    Buy Acidophilus Step 10.jpg
  3. Chew acidophilus tablets.[20] Chewable acidophilus tablets are a good alternative for children and adults who have difficulty swallowing pills. Just like the capsules, you need to get 1 to 4 billion CFU per day through 1 to 2 tablets.
    Buy Acidophilus Step 11.jpg
    • Some suppliers offer acidophilus tablets that taste like strawberry or other flavors.
    • Don't give these supplements to children under 3 years unless directed to by your doctor.
  4. Mix acidophilus powder into your food.[21] Acidophilus powder is available in large bottles through health food stores and online vitamin suppliers. The powder can be mixed with juice or water, or sprinkled over food. It has a slightly sweet and chalky taste. About 1/4 tsp. (1.23 ml) of the powder is equal to 2 capsules or tablets.
    Buy Acidophilus Step 12.jpg
    • Be aware that every time you open the container, the powder is exposed to contamination and humidity, which can cause it to deteriorate.
    • As opposed to tablets or capsules, you are in charge of measuring the correct dosage with powders. Measure carefully![22]
  5. Drink acidophilus milk.[23] Acidophilus milk is available through health food stores and some grocery stores. The milk has a tangy taste and a slightly thicker consistency than cow's milk. Unlike the advertised CFU strength in tablets, capsules and powders, the amount of the supplement in the milk usually isn't verified. It can be hard to know how much acidophilus you're actually drinking.
    Buy Acidophilus Step 13.jpg
  6. Ingest acidophilus through foods.[24][25] Yogurt and soy products contain natural forms of acidophilus. When choosing yogurt for its probiotic value, look for yogurt that contains live l. acidophilus cultures and no added sugars. Some fresh fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, also contain acidophilus. However, the amount of probiotics in food sources do not meet the recommended dosages for acidophilus supplements. Therefore, while yogurt, soy products and fresh produce are helpful in increasing probiotic intake, they are not a substitute for an acidophilus supplement.
    Buy Acidophilus Step 14.jpg
    • Although food sources are great, a supplement is the only true way to consume enough of this. It is a great idea to do both of these methods!

EditTips

  • Acidophilus supplements should be taken before a meal or on an empty stomach when stomach acid is at its lowest. The low acid allows the acidophilus to more easily pass through the stomach into the intestine.
  • Purchase acidophilus in glass bottles, rather than plastic bottles. Plastic bottles are porous, which can cause the acidophilus to lose its potency.
  • Keep acidophilus supplements refrigerated at all times. To maintain its quality, acidophilus should be stored at a temperature below 40 degrees F (4.5 degrees C). There may be some formulations that you do not have to refrigerate. Always read and follow product labels.

EditWarnings

  • People with weakened immune systems or those with artificial heart valves should consult their doctors before taking acidophilus supplements or any probiotic products.
  • Always consult a doctor before giving infants or children acidophilus supplements.
  • Do not take acidophilus with antibiotics. The antibiotics will kill the good bacteria. Take acidophilus and antibiotics at least 2 hours apart.

How to Take an Open Book Exam

Posted: 10 Jul 2016 09:00 AM PDT

Most times, students think you don't have to study for an open book exam. However, this is not the case. An open book exam requires having a genuine understanding of the material and skills like interpretation and critical thinking. Exam prep, note taking skills, and test taking strategies are all key aspects of succeeding during an open book exam.

EditSteps

EditPreparing for the Exam

  1. Understand the rationale behind an open book exam. Generally, open book exams are administered to promote a specific kind of learning and comprehension. Knowing what you're being tested on can help you ace an open book exam.
Take an Open Book Exam Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • Open exams are meant to teach students how to learn. In an open book exam, the focus is not on memorizing information but applying that information. What this means for you is that you will not simply be summarizing material from a textbook. You will be interpreting it in the context of specific questions and scenarios.[1]
    • There are two types of open book exams: a restricted type and an unrestricted type. In a restricted exam material is limited to specific documents, such as a single set of notes or single textbook. In an unrestricted exam, there is no limit on what can be brought into the exam room. Make sure you know if your exam is restricted or unrestricted before taking the test.[2]
    • Memorization is largely unnecessary for an open book exam and many people feel this means they do not need to study. This is not the case. Focus is shifted to understanding the material rather than simply being able to memorize and recite it. You will not be asked questions like, "Define X" but rather, "Explain how X applies to Y situation" or "What implications does X have on Y current event?" You should make sure you truly understand the material before entering the exam room.[3]
  2. Locate and mark key information beforehand. If your exam permits you to take your book in, you don't want to enter the room with a 150-page textbook and simply scroll through blindly. Organize your textbook beforehand to help you locate key information quickly and easily.[4]
Take an Open Book Exam Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • If permitted, highlighters can be a great tool. Mark key terms, historical dates, equations, and other difficult to remember material that you might need to draw from for questions. You can flip through your book and easily spot the highlighted sections during the exam.
    • Margin notes can also be a great means of organization, if allowed. Jotting down your instructors commentary or brief summaries of difficult paragraphs in the margins can help you spot important materials fast.
    • Mark pages. Many people dog-ear important pages, but simple folding can be easy to miss. Try investing in multicolored sticky notes specifically designed for marking pages, which you can buy at most bookstores and department stores. You can even color coordinate any passages you're marking, using different colors to indicate different areas of focus.
    • In the event of a restricted exam that does not permit a textbook in the exam room, these strategies still have merit. Organizing your book during the course of a class can help you easily spot key information while studying.
  3. Strive to understand the material. Studying for an open book exam can be tricky as the skills required are not as easy to test as simple memorization. However, there are tricks you can use to make sure you're prepared for an open book exam.
Take an Open Book Exam Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • Write your own commentary on information. As you'll be tested primarily on interpretation, write down your own commentary and insight in your notes. Challenge yourself to explain what you think about the material, and why. This helps hone your critical thinking skills, which will be needed for an open book exam.[5]
    • If your professor provided any model questions, answer them while studying. Open book exam questions promote a genuine understanding of the course material, so quizzing yourself using model questions is a great way to make sure you're prepared going in.[6]
    • Team up with other students. While study groups are great for any type of exam, they can be especially helpful for an open book. Rather than quizzing one another on materials, you can discuss and debate information from class. This helps you learn how to apply the information you learned.[7]

EditDeveloping Note Taking Skills

  1. Attend all lectures and class periods. This should be obvious, but the best way to assure your notes are reflective of the testing material is to attend all lectures and class periods regularly.
Take an Open Book Exam Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • Remember, an open book exam is not just memorizing material; it's striving to genuinely understand it. Each professor and teacher has a unique area of focus when it comes to covering reading materials. You can't replicate your instructor's preferences by studying the reading materials alone. You need to attend class.[8]
    • If you do not understand something, take note of this. Leave a blank section in your notes to be filled in later. Ask other classmates or email your professor if you're struggling to understand this concept. If your instructor talks fast, consider recording the lectures. While you are probably unable to take recordings into a lecture hall, you can always listen after the lecture to try and better catch the material.[9]
    • In the event you have to miss due to illness or emergency, have a friend or fellow classmate whose notes you can borrow. Ask someone you know is a good note taker and dedicated student rather than someone who misses frequently and appears disengaged in class.
  2. Organize your notes. You don't want to walk into your exam with a stack of papers covered in random facts and figures. Organize your notes during lectures and then again while prepping for the exam.
Take an Open Book Exam Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • Use a system of enumerating and indenting your notes. Many people use roman numerals, using capital letters for headings and lower case for subheadings (e.g., IV and i.v.).[10]
    • Date all of your notes. That way, you can locate subjects that confuse you if you remember the approximate time of year they were reviewed in class.[11]
    • Keep your class notes separate. Use a three-ring binder or notebook to separate one class's notes from another or use a different notebook for each class.[12]
    • Write legibly. If you know your handwriting is sloppy, see if you can bring a laptop to class and type notes. Be careful, however. Many instructors ban laptops as they assume students are using them to disengage with class.[13]
    • While you might be tempted to doodle during dull moments in class, try to refrain from doing so as these drawings will distract you later on while trying to study.[14]
    • Place material you struggle with at the beginning of your notes. This way, you'll have quick access to it during the exam. You should also list equations, key terms, and dates towards the beginning as this information can be tricky to recall and will likely show up on the exam.
  3. Focus on the important things. We're sometimes tempted to transcribe more or less entire books or entire lectures when prepping for open book exams. However, this method is not only incredibly time consuming it's ineffective. You'll end up scrambling through pages and pages of notes and run down the clock during exam time.
Take an Open Book Exam Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Pay attention to where the most focus is placed during lectures. If something is written on the board, repeated, or discussed for an extended period it will probably show up on the exam. Include those subjects in your exam notes.[15]
    • Listen at the end of lectures. Oftentimes, your instructor will provide a brief closing statement that summarizes the most important takeaways from that day's class.[16]
    • Compare notes with classmates. If certain subjects overlap, these are probably important areas to focus your notes for the exam. You can also see what key issues you might have missed.[17]

EditTaking the Exam

  1. Stay calm. Exam anxiety can affect performance, so make sure you know good strategies to keep your nerves in check in the exam room.
Take an Open Book Exam Step 7.jpg
    • Stop studying an hour before the exam and use this time to take care of yourself. Take a walk or eat something light. If you're poring over material right before an exam begins, you'll likely psych yourself out.[18]
    • Know the time and place of the exam and give yourself extra time to get there. Getting lost or running late can increase anxiety and affect performance.[19]
    • Get a good night's sleep before the exam. Anything that affects you physically can affect you mentally, so make sure you're rested and refreshed before entering the exam room.[20]
    • If you start to feel nervous during the exam, take a moment to stop. While time is an issue, plowing through and exam despite feelings of anxiety will lead to a poor overall performance. Do not hesitate to stop, close your eyes, and take several deep breaths to calm yourself before continuing.[21]
  2. Use test taking strategies during the exam. There are a variety of strategies you can take to make the most of your time during the exam period and improve your chances of getting a great grade.
Take an Open Book Exam Step 8.jpg
    • Your open book exam will probably be timed. Be aware of how much time you have and take a quick moment to calculate roughly how long you should spend on each question.[22]
    • Answer any questions you can without notes first. This will save you time by allowing you to get through certain questions without fumbling with your notes. This also gives you more time with the questions where you might have difficulty and need to consult your notes.[23]
    • If you're really struggling with a question, treat it like you would on any other exam. Simply leave it and come back at the end of the test when you've had time to calm down and gather your thoughts.
  3. Review your answers, if there's time. If you have time left at the end of the exam, go through the questions one more time using your notes to your advantage.
Take an Open Book Exam Step 9.jpg
    • Go back through your exam and check areas that include information that's easily mixed up, like dates, names, vocabulary, and equations.
    • Find any questions that you feel your answers were weak on and try to improve them in the remaining time.

EditTips

  • Even if you have a closed-book test, make a note sheet. You don't have to use it on the test, but it is a great study guide.
  • If you have any questions or concerns on what you can and can't bring into the exam room, do not hesitate to contact your teacher or professor and ask beforehand.

EditWarnings

  • Don't transcribe too many notes as this can make it difficult to locate information during the exam.
  • You can't simply copy information word-for-word from your textbooks: this is plagiarism, and could make you fail the exam or even the course, as well as incur disciplinary action or penalties.

How to Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil

Posted: 10 Jul 2016 01:00 AM PDT

Head lice are tiny wingless insects that only live on the human head, attaching themselves and their eggs to the hair shaft. Contrary to popular belief, head lice do not spread any disease, and they are not caused by poor hygiene. They are spread by close person-to-person contact. If you or your child winds up with head lice, it's often possible to treat the problem with tea tree oil.

EditSteps

EditRecognizing and Minimizing Head Lice Infestations

  1. Recognize the symptoms of head lice. Many things can cause an itchy scalp, and it's easy to mistake conditions such as dandruff for head lice.[1] It's important to know what to look for so that you can treat head lice effectively:
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 1 Version 4.jpg
    • Use a fine-toothed comb to examine the hair and scalp for lice and nits. Live head lice are about the size of a sesame seed (between 2-3mm long). Nits, or lice eggs, are usually yellowish white and stick onto hairs near the scalp. They are slightly smaller than adult lice.[2]
    • Look for nits that are stuck to the hair shaft. Nits stuck to the hair shaft within ¼ inch of the scalp are the most likely to be viable (i.e., will hatch into lice). This is because head lice feed on tiny amounts of blood they draw from the human scalp. They also thrive on the warmth provided by your head. Nits that are further down the hair shaft are usually dead or already hatched.[3]
    • Use a magnifying glass to examine the hair and scalp. Dirt particles and dandruff can often be mistaken for lice, so use a magnifying glass to determine whether there are live lice in addition to nits. If you don't see live lice and the only nits are further down the hair shaft from the scalp, the infestation is probably already over.[4]
    • Look behind the ears and at the hairline. Lice and nits are often easier to see in areas where the hair is thinner.[5]
  2. Examine everyone in the household for head lice. Although they cannot fly or jump, head lice are extremely contagious and can easily infest everyone in a household.[6] If one person in your household has head lice, check everyone's hair and scalp for signs of infestation.
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 2 Version 4.jpg
    • Head lice are most easily spread by sharing hair brushes, hats, or beds with an infested person. If you have children who sleep in the same bed or room, or who share clothing regularly, make sure you examine everyone for head lice.
  3. Put clean clothing on. If someone in your household has head lice, have them remove their clothing and put on fresh clothes. There may be some nits on their clothes, especially shirts, scarves, or hats.[7]
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 3 Version 4.jpg
  4. Wash household items used by the infested person. Head lice are not caused by poor hygiene. However, they can cling to fabric and household items and could spread from those items to other people, so it's important to clean and disinfect those items thoroughly.[8]
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 4 Version 4.jpg
    • Machine wash and heat dry clothing, bed linens, hats, towels, and other fabrics that have come into contact with the infested person. Use hot water and the high heat drying cycle. If the items cannot be machine washed, seal them in a plastic bag and store them for 2 weeks. This will suffocate the lice.[9]
    • Soak combs and brushes in very hot water (a minimum of 130°F) for 5-10 minutes, or run them through a hot dishwasher cycle.
    • Vacuum floors and upholstered furniture. Head lice cannot survive very long if they can't feed on humans, but vacuuming will help eliminate any lice that have fallen off a person and keep them from attaching to someone else.
  5. Treat everyone in the household at the same time. Anyone who has signs of lice infestation, or who shares a bedroom with the infested person, should be treated immediately. Otherwise, lice may remain in someone's hair and start another infestation.

EditUsing Tea Tree Oil to Treat Head Lice Infestations

  1. Purchase pure tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has natural antimicrobial, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties.[10] Although the exact mechanisms are not yet understood, tea tree oil has been shown to be effective in killing lice nits and reducing the number of live lice. It may also have lice-repelling properties.[11]
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 6 Version 4.jpg
    • A combination of tea tree oil and lavender oil has been shown to kill lice eggs and live lice.[12] Look for pure lavender oil.
    • While many shampoos and conditioners have tea tree oil in them, they are unlikely to have a high enough concentration to be effective. A minimum concentration of 2% tea tree oil is required to kill lice nits.[13]
    • Look for "steam-distilled" tea tree oil from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree.
  2. Purchase a lice comb. This type of comb has very closely spaced teeth that help you examine the hair near the scalp.
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 7 Version 3.jpg
    • If you don't have one, purchase a magnifying glass too. This will help you examine the scalp after treatment.
  3. Make a tea tree oil solution with shampoo. Because pure tea tree oil can cause skin irritation, it's best to mix it with a mild shampoo before using it as a treatment.
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 8 Version 3.jpg
    • Use an eye dropper to put 2-4 drops of tea tree oil in a small bowl.
    • Add 2-4 drops of lavender oil.
    • Add 96-98 drops of a mild shampoo. (If you want to eyeball it, add enough shampoo to make a small pool about the size of a quarter.)
    • Add a few drops of olive or coconut oil, as this will help suffocate the lice.[14]
    • Stir the mixture together until blended thoroughly.
  4. Work the shampoo mixture into the hair. Pay extra attention to the scalp area, as that is where most of the nits and lice will be. Cover the hair with a shower cap or swimming cap. Leave the treatment in for 30 minutes.
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 9 Version 3.jpg
    • If your child experiences itching or burning during the treatment, this may be a sign of an allergic reaction.[15] Rinse their hair immediately with warm water and re-wash the hair with a very mild shampoo. Towel-dry the hair and then allow it to air dry. Repeat the wash if your child still has an itchy or red scalp.
  5. Work the shampoo into a lather and rinse. Thoroughly lather the hair and work through it with your fingers to make sure you eliminate as many lice as possible. Rinse completely with warm water.
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 10 Version 3.jpg
  6. Apply conditioner to the hair. Because it is very thick, conditioner can help suffocate any lice that were not killed by the tea tree oil. It will also help you run the lice comb through the hair. Do not rinse out the conditioner.
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 11 Version 3.jpg
  7. Use a lice comb to comb through the hair. Start at the scalp, because this is where lice nits are laid and hatch. If the person being treated has long hair, divide it into sections and comb through one section at a time.
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 12 Version 3.jpg
    • Take your time with this step! If you don't catch even a few nits, they could hatch within a few days and start the whole infestation over again.
  8. Repeat Steps 3-7 daily for 7 days. This may seem like overkill, but it is highly effective. Because lice nits take about a week to hatch and mature into adult lice, maintaining the treatment for a full week helps ensure you kill any stragglers.
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 13 Version 3.jpg
  9. Use a shampoo containing tea tree oil regularly. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo using the same ratio as for the treatment, or purchase a shampoo that already contains tea tree oil. Using this shampoo once a week may help prevent a reinfestation.
Remove Lice Using Tea Tree Oil Step 14 Version 3.jpg

EditTips

  • If your child has head lice, make sure to tell your child's school or daycare so that they can alert other parents. Young children spread head lice very easily, and widespread preventive action can keep head lice infestations from reappearing.[16]
  • Head lice can only live on human heads; they are not spread by pets.
  • Keep your children away from "head-to-head" contact as much as possible (no headbutting, no sharing pillows at sleepovers, etc.). Encourage them not to share clothing, hats, barrettes, or other items with others. This will help reduce your child's risk of picking up lice from a friend.[17]

EditWarnings

  • Tea tree oil is toxic when ingested by mouth. Do not apply tea tree oil near your mouth, and do not ingest it orally.
  • Tea tree oil has not been tested for safety in pregnant or breastfeeding women and is not recommended for use by these women.
  • Some people may have an allergic reaction to tea tree oil. If you experience redness, irritation, or itching, stop using the tea tree oil treatment.
  • Tea tree oil may cause hormonal side effects in pre-pubescent males, including abnormal breast growth (gynecomastia). While no direct link between tea tree oil and this condition has been established, it is not recommended that you use tea tree oil on young males.[18]
