How to Take Cuttings

Growing plants from cuttings, also known as propagation, is a technique that gardeners use to grow new plants from older, healthy plants. It's great for increasing the number of plants that you have or taking your favorite plants from your garden with you when you move. To take cuttings for propagation, you'll need to select a stock plant, carefully take the cuttings, and properly plant the cuttings.

  1. Survey your garden for potential stock or "mother" plants. In the spring or early summer, start looking for plants that have plenty of new growth. You'll want to take cuttings from these plants because there will be a few different stems for you to pick from.[1]

    • New growth is generally easier to propagate than older growth because it has more "growing" cells that are reproducing rapidly.
  2. Visit a nursery if you don't currently have a garden. If you're just starting your garden and don't have any stock plants, visit a local nursery and ask if you'd be able to take a few cuttings of larger plants. Most of the time they'll let you if you take a small amount.

    • If you have friends, family, or neighbors growing the types of plants you want to propagate, you can always ask them for cuttings, too.
    • Be very careful when transporting your cuttings. Place them in a plastic bag with a few drops of water or wrap the ends in a damp paper towel. Then put the bag in a box to prevent any bumping or crushing of the nodes.
  3. Select a stock plant to cut from. The plant should be large and healthy, so that cutting off a small amount won't cause it to die. It should also be free from pests, and non-flowering during the time of year that you're taking your cuttings.[2]

    • It's best to gather cuttings earlier in the morning when the plants are full of water. It will make it easier to cut and they'll be more likely to maintain their water when propagated.

  1. Select a healthy stem with new growth. When selecting a stem, you should look for young, green growth, as they have a better chance for taking roots when planted. Select a piece of stem with a few leaves on it.[3]

    • You want to be sure you're able to identify the nodes, which are places where a leaf meets the stem.
  2. Measure the stem out to long. You'll want to have enough length on the stem to plant it deeply within the soil so that it can form roots. It should have a few sets of leaves located along the stem.[4]

  3. Cut below a node with a sharp pair of sterilized scissors. Once you've measured the stem, cut just below a node. The node will look like a knob in the stem where it connects to the rest of the plant. Make sure the node is still on the cutting.[5]

    • Avoid handling the cutting by its stem or node by gently holding onto one of the lower leaves.
    • You can sterilize scissors by wiping them with rubbing alcohol. This is to prevent contamination of the cells located at the node.
  4. Remove the lower leaves of the plant, leaving 1 or 2 pairs at the top. While the new plant needs leaves to provide energy through photosynthesis, too many leaves will compete with the plant's efforts to send out new roots. Lower leaves will touch the soil and likely cause the cutting to rot, so they can be removed.[6]

  5. Gather your cuttings in a plastic bag containing a few drops of water. By doing so, you can prevent them from wilting while you work. This is especially important for cuttings taken outside, because the sun can cause them to lose water quickly when removed from their plant.[7]

  1. Fill a drainable container with potting soil. Potting mix, which is often a mixture of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite, will generally yield better results for potted plants because of its superior drainage. If your container doesn't have drainage holes, you can drill 3-4 of them into the bottom of the container.[8]

    • You can also find soil specifically for cuttings at most home improvement stores.
  2. Water the soil in the container before you plant the cuttings. This is to make sure the cuttings have water available immediately once they are in their container. Water until the soil is moist, but not soaked.

  3. Use a pencil or a chopstick to make holes in the soil. Creating a hole before you insert your cutting ensures your cutting won't be bent or snapped when it's inserted into the soil.[9]

    • You can also use a knitting needle or your own finger if you don't have a pencil or a chopstick.
  4. Insert cuttings into their individual holes. Ensure that the leaves are not buried, and that the plant is stable enough to stand upright. It's best to plant just below a leaf break, where two leaves shoot off in opposite directions.[10]

    • You can plant several cuttings in a single container, but be careful not to overcrowd the pot. For a medium-sized container about across, 5-6 cuttings will fill the pot with enough room to grow.
  5. Cover the container with a plastic bag to seal in moisture. Place the pot with your cuttings into a large, clear plastic bag, secure the bag with a rubber band. Place the pot away from the window in an area that gets plenty of sunlight, so that moisture becomes trapped in the bag for the plants to use for photosynthesis.[11]

    • Be sure to cut small holes or leave part of the bag outside of the rubber band to allow air to flow.
  6. Water and monitor your cuttings. Make sure the soil in the container is moist, but not soaked, at all times. Don't let the soil dry out. Regularly check the bottom of the container for any roots.

    • If any of them begin to look unhealthy, remove them from the container.
  7. Transplant cuttings to individual containers when roots become visible. Check the drainage holes at the bottom of the container for visible roots once per week. Once the cuttings are growing rapidly or roots appear at the bottom of the container, you can dig up and transplant each cutting to separate containers.[12]

    • When transplanting, be gentle when lifting the plant from the container, preserving as many roots as possible. Add more potting soil to the new container and place it in a sunny area. Transplant again when the roots fill the pot.

  • Hydrangeas, lavender, and forsythia are all great plants for taking cuttings from, as their cuttings tend to take roots quickly and grow well.

Popping and cracking in your knees is generally not something to worry about. It's often caused by the cartilage on your knee becoming rough and grinding together.[1] However, this roughness and grinding could lead to a loss of cartilage in your knee, which can lead the onset of osteoarthritis.[2] If you're worried about new sounds your knees are making, go see a doctor. Otherwise, take steps to help your knees, such as giving your knees a break by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, strengthening your leg muscles, and keeping an eye out for worsening knee problems.

  1. Use calf releases to lengthen muscles. To perform this exercise, sit on the floor. Place a tennis ball under one calf. Put your other leg on top of the first leg. Roll your calf up and down on the tennis ball. If you hit a tight spot, wiggle your foot up and down for about half a minute.[3]

    • This exercise helps stretch out your calf muscles. If these muscles are tight, they can put pressure on your knee, possibly pulling the kneecap out of alignment.

  2. Work on tender spots in your IT band to stretch the ligament. While on your side, place a foam roller under your thigh. Roll your leg up and down on it from the hip to the knee. If you hit a sore spot, spend extra time using the foam roller on that spot.[4]

    • This ligament stretches from your thigh to your shin. Sometimes, it has tight spots that tug on your knee, putting pressure on it.
    • Work on rolling out spots for 30 seconds to 2 minutes at least 6 times a week.
  3. Try a hip flexor release to stretch your hip muscles. Tape 2 tennis balls together to make a larger roller. Lay face down on the floor, and put the roller under your hip just below the hip bone. Lean into the balls as much as you can, and lift that calf off the ground, creating a 90-degree angle with your leg. Swing your leg side to side for 30 seconds or so.[5]

    • The hip muscles also work to keep the knee properly aligned. If they are out of whack, it can cause problems with your knee.
  4. Try quadriceps sets to strengthen the quadriceps muscles. Sit on the floor with your legs out in front of you. Tighten your quadriceps muscles, using your hand to check they're tight. Hold for 8 seconds and then release for 2.[6]

    • The quadriceps are the muscles at the front of your thigh, and making these muscles stronger can help prevent further knee problems.
    • Work up to repetitions of 30.
    • Aim for 2-3 days a week of strength training.[7]
  5. Do straight-leg raises to work your quadriceps. Lay on you back on the floor. Have one leg out flat in front of you and the other bent at the knee. Tighten your quadriceps, and tilt the leg flat on the ground outward a little. Lift the flat leg off the floor about , then lower it back down.[8]

    • Begin with 2-3 repetitions and move up to 10-12.[9]
  6. Work on wall squats to make your quadriceps stronger. Stand with your back up against the wall. Your feet should be from the wall. Using the friction of the wall, lower yourself down until you're in a sitting position. If you can't go that far, don't force it. Stay in this position for 20 seconds.[10]

    • Try 10 repetitions.
  7. Swim regularly to make your quadriceps stronger. Swimming is a great way to strengthen these muscles, taking pressure off your knee, so try to incorporate swimming into your exercise routine. Aim for 30 to 45 minutes 3 to 5 days a week.[11]

  8. Exercise by walking on level ground. Walking is a great way to strengthen your quad muscles. However, if you're beginning to develop knee problems, stick to level ground as much as possible, particularly if your problems are structural.[12]

    • Try walking in a mall or an indoor walking track.
    • Choose walking for one or more of your 3 to 5 exercise days in the week. Walk for 30 to 45 minutes.
  9. Take your bike out for a ride. Hopping on your bike is another low-impact way to strengthen your quadriceps. Stationary bikes or regular bikes work equally as well, though don't jump into an advanced cycling class if you haven't been exercising. Start slow and steady.[13]

    • Osteoarthritis gets progressively worse over time, and treatment can help stop the worsening effect. Talk to your doctor about how diet and exercise can help treat osteoarthritis.

  5. Seek immediate medical care for sudden injuries. If you have a sudden onset of pain or your knee buckles, see a doctor right away. Go to urgent care or the emergency room if you have intense pain, you can't stand on your knee, or you have sudden swelling.[18]

    • Also go to urgent care or the emergency room if your limb looks deformed or if you heard a popping sound when you were injured.
    • To help with the pain right away, take an NSAID like Ibuprofen.
  6. Expect a physical exam. The doctor will likely begin with a physical exam. They may feel your knee, for instance, to check if it's swollen. They will also ask you about your recent medical history and why you're coming in for a visit.[19]
