How to Address a Letter to a Family

Posted: 05 Apr 2021 05:00 PM PDT

If you're writing a letter to a family, there are several ways you can address them. Most letters start off with "Dear" and then the person or family's name. For a casual and friendly salutation, list each of their first names, while a more formal letter could address a family using titles like "Ms." or Mr." For a simple solution, address the family as a collective group by writing their last name and then "family" after it.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Choosing the Correct Written Name

  1. Start your letter with the salutation "Dear." This is the most common way to begin a letter to someone. Write "Dear" and then the person's name or family's names right after it.[1]
Address a Letter to a Family Step 1.jpg
    • Instead of "Dear," you might choose to begin the letter with "Hello."
  2. Call the family members by their first names for a casual greeting. This is a good way to begin your letter if you know the family well. After "Dear," write each person's name starting with the parents and ending with the children's names.[2]

    • For a more personal touch, consider adding the family's pet names onto the list at the end as well.
    • Tack on the family's last name after the last person's first name, if desired. For example: "Dear Sally, David, and Lilly Stevens."
  3. Address the family as a collective group by writing their last name and "Family." For example, "Dear Smith family," or "To the Turner Family." This eliminates the need to write each person's name and is a great condensed salutation.[3]
Address a Letter to a Family Step 3.jpg
    • Whether you choose to capitalize the word "family" is up to you, but the family's last name should always be capitalized.
  4. Add "Mr" and "Mrs" to make your writing more formal. These titles can be tacked on before first names or last names. For instance, your letter might start off with, "Dear Mr. and Mrs. Adams," or "Dear Ms. Kate, Mr. Robert, and Miss Sierra." This makes your letter a bit more official and proper.[4]
Address a Letter to a Family Step 4.jpg
    • If you're not sure how a woman prefers to be addressed, use "Ms."
    • Another example might be, "Dear Ms. Stern and Mr. Lichtman."
  5. Write each person's individual name if they don't share the same last name. This is used if you're addressing a married couple that uses different last names, as well as an unmarried couple or children that live in the same house but share different last names. Either write their first and last names, or write each person's last name with a title in front of it.[5]
Address a Letter to a Family Step 5.jpg
    • For example, you might write, "Dear Ross Green and Trudy Smith."
    • Another example would be, "Dear Mr. Thornhill and Mrs. Morgan."
  6. Use a distinguishing title if a person in the family has one. If an adult in the family is a doctor, reverend, or other type of distinguished person, add their title before their name. For example, if you're addressing a doctor, you would write, "Dear Dr. Parker" along with the rest of the family's names.[6]
Address a Letter to a Family Step 6.jpg
    • Add the titles for military personnel and judges as well.
    • Another example would be, "Dear Lieutenant Allen and family," or "Dear. Reverend Smith, Mrs. Smith, and family."
  7. Add a comma after the name and begin writing your letter. Once you've written the family's name as you'd like it to appear in your letter, add a comma as punctuation for the salutation. Skip a line or two after writing the salutation, and begin writing the body of your letter.[7]
Address a Letter to a Family Step 7.jpg
    • Instead of a comma, you could also use a colon or em dash, though a comma is most common.

[Edit]Addressing the Envelope

  1. Use neat handwriting to make sure the post office can read the address. It's best to print the names and address instead of writing them in cursive to ensure that they're legible. Use neat handwriting and a pen so your letter gets to the right place.[8]
Address a Letter to a Family Step 8.jpg
  2. Write the return address in the top left corner of the envelope. This is the sender's address, so if you're writing the letter, you'll put your address in the top left corner. Write your full name on the first line, your street address or PO box on the second line, and your city, state, and zip code on the third line.[9]
Address a Letter to a Family Step 9.jpg
    • Start your writing in the uppermost corner to ensure you have enough space.
  3. Put the family name and address in the center of the envelope. Since you don't have a lot of space in the middle of the envelope, avoid listing each family member's name and instead just write their collective family last name. Write the family name in the center of the envelope, their street address right below their name, and their city, state, and zip code on the third line.[10][11]
Address a Letter to a Family Step 10.jpg
    • If the family contains people with different last names, you might address the envelope as, "The Smiths and the Walkers."
    • Use the family's PO box if they don't have a street address.
    • A sample envelope might read (first line) The Jones Family (second line) 1234 wikiHow Place (third line) Palo Alto, California 94301.
  4. Place a stamp in the top right corner so your letter is ready to be mailed. Use enough postage to ensure your letter gets to its destination. Place the stamp (or multiple stamps) in the upper right corner, pressing down on it to make sure it sticks.[12]
Address a Letter to a Family Step 11.jpg
    • If you're not sure how many stamps to use, go online to the post office's website for more information.

How to Copy and Paste a Link

Posted: 05 Apr 2021 09:00 AM PDT

Links to online articles and websites improve the richness of online text and increase its search engine optimization. You can reference almost any website by copying and pasting the link into your email, text message, or document. The procedure may differ slightly depending upon the computer, device or program you are using. If the address is very long, you can use a link shortening service.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Windows and Mac

  1. Copy and paste an address from the address bar. If you want to share or save a website you're visiting, you can copy the address from the address bar of your browser:
Copy and Paste a Link Step 1 Version 6.jpg
    • Click the address in your browser. This may reveal the entire address if parts were hidden while browsing.
    • Select the entire address if it isn't already. Usually the address will automatically be selected when you click it. If it isn't, press / to select the entire thing.
    • Copy the selected address by right-clicking the selection and clicking "Copy," or by pressing /.
    • Place your cursor where you want to paste the link and press /.
  2. Find the link you want to copy. You can copy links from websites, emails, Word documents, and pretty much any other program.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 2 Version 6.jpg
    • Text links in web pages and emails are often underlined and a different color than the surrounding text. Many links are buttons and pictures.
  3. Right-click the link.[1] If the link is a picture, right-clicking the picture will provide the Copy option.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 3 Version 6.jpg
    • If you're on a Mac with a single mouse button, hold and click to open the right-click menu.
  4. Select the "Copy link" option. When a link is copied, it is sent to your clipboard to be pasted elsewhere.[2] The clipboard can only store a single link at a time. The wording of this option will vary depending on what program you are using. Below are some common examples:
Copy and Paste a Link Step 4 Version 6.jpg
    • Chrome - "Copy link address"
    • Firefox - "Copy Link Location"
    • Internet Explorer - "Copy shortcut"
    • Safari - "Copy Link"
    • Word - "Copy Hyperlink"
  5. Place your cursor where you want to paste the link. Once your link is copied, you can paste it anywhere you can type.[3] Click to place your cursor wherever you want to paste the link.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 5 Version 5.jpg
    • You can paste the link anywhere you can type, including in emails, Word documents, your browser's address bar, Facebook chats, and more.
  6. Paste the link. There are several ways you can paste your copied link:
Copy and Paste a Link Step 6 Version 5.jpg
    • Right-click wherever your cursor is and select "Paste."
    • Press (Windows) or (Mac).
    • Click the Edit menu (if present) and select "Paste." Not all programs have a visible Edit menu.
  7. Paste the link as a hyperlink with different text. Some programs, such as blogs, email programs, and word processors, allow you to change the text that displays instead of showing the whole link address. This lets you create a link with a sentence or word:[4]
Copy and Paste a Link Step 7 Version 5.jpg
    • Place your cursor where you want the hyperlink to go.
    • Click the "Insert Hyperlink" button. This may be below the text form, or in the Insert menu (word processors). The button often has a chainlink icon.
    • Type what you want to appear in the "Text to display" field. This is what will appear as the clickable link.
    • Paste the link in the "Address," "URL," or "Link to" field. Click in the field and press (Windows) or (Mac) to paste the copied link.

[Edit]Mobile Devices

  1. Find the link you want to copy. You can copy links from web browsers, emails, and many other apps. Links may be traditional text links or may be a picture.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 8 Version 5.jpg
    • The process for this is very similar regardless of what type of mobile device you're using (Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows mobile, etc.)
  2. Press and hold the link you want to copy. Once you've found the link, press and hold it until a new menu appears. It may take a few moments for the menu to show up.[5]
Copy and Paste a Link Step 9 Version 5.jpg
  3. Tap the "Copy" option. The wording for this will vary depending on the app you are using. Look for wording similar to these examples:
Copy and Paste a Link Step 10 Version 5.jpg
    • Copy
    • Copy link address
    • Copy link URL
    • Copy address
  4. Place your cursor where you want to paste the link. Once you've copied the link, you can paste it anywhere you can type. Tap the text field to place your cursor.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 11 Version 5.jpg
  5. Press and hold your finger on your cursor. Release your finger after a moment. A new menu will appear.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 12 Version 5.jpg
    • If you're using an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch), release your finger once the magnifier lens appears.
    • If you're using an Android device, release your finger when the indicator under the cursor appears.
  6. Tap "Paste" to paste your copied link. You'll see the "Paste" option in the menu that appears. Tapping "Paste" will paste the copied address into the text field.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 13 Version 4.jpg
  7. Copy and paste a link from a text message (Android). If you've received a text message with a link on your Android device, you may have to do a little more work to copy it, especially if there is other text with it. Not all Android messaging apps will function the same:
Copy and Paste a Link Step 14 Version 4.jpg
    • Press and hold on the message that contains the link.
    • Tap the "Copy" button that appears. It may just be an icon of two pages stacked on each other at the top of the screen.
    • Paste the copied text where you want to paste the link, and then manually delete any extra text that came with the original message.

[Edit]Using a Link Shortener

  1. Use a link shortener service when you need to text or tweet a link. Website addresses can get really long, especially for pages buried deep in a site. Link shortener services allow you to generate a short version of a long address that can easily be texted, tweeted, or otherwise shared.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 15 Version 4.jpg
  2. Copy the link you want to share. Use the methods outlined above to copy the link you want to shorten and share.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 16 Version 4.jpg
  3. Visit a link shortener website. There are several services available for shortening links, and most work very similarly:
Copy and Paste a Link Step 17 Version 4.jpg
    • bit.ly
    • goo.gl
    • ow.ly
    • tinyurl.com
  4. Paste your long link into the field on the shortener site. Click the field and press /, or long-press and select "Paste," to paste your long link into the field on the shortener site.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 18 Version 4.jpg
  5. Tap or click the "Shorten" or "Shrink" button to generate a new link. You'll be presented with a short version of the link that uses the service's format instead of the original site's.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 19 Version 4.jpg
  6. Copy the shortened link. You can copy like you would a regular link using the methods above, or tap or click the "Copy" button that some sites display.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 20 Version 4.jpg
  7. Paste your shortened link. Now that your shortened link has been copied, you can paste it just like you would any other link. You may want to give some context for the link, since it won't be apparent what it's for by looking at the shortened address.
Copy and Paste a Link Step 21 Version 4.jpg

How to Make Money Writing on Medium

Posted: 05 Apr 2021 01:00 AM PDT

This wikiHow teaches you how to get paid for posting stories on Medium. When you enroll in Medium's Partner Program, you can place your articles behind Medium's metered paywall, making them available only to paid users. Medium then determines your pay based on how long and often people engage with your writing.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Enrolling in the Partner Program

  1. Learn how Medium calculates earnings. Medium offers bloggers the opportunity to share free and paid content. When you publish a story behind Medium's paywall, it will only be visible to only paid subscribers (and some non-subscribers who haven't yet run out of articles).[1] To make money with Medium, you'll need to place your articles behind their paywall, which you can do once you enroll in Medium's Partner Program.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 1.jpg
    • Even if you join the Partner Program, you can still publish articles that are freely available to all users. You won't make money on those articles, but they may encourage new readers to check out your paid content.
    • Your pay is determined by reading time—the amount of time a reader spends actively reading your post, which includes scrolling and moving the mouse.[2] Medium members pay $5/month subscription fees, and those fees are then distributed to writers based on the time those readers spend on each members' articles.
  2. Go to https://medium.com/earn in a web browser. This is the website for Medium's Partner Program.[3]
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 2.jpg
  3. Click . It's the black button on the left side of the page.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 3.jpg
    • If you're not already signed in to your Medium account, you'll be prompted to do so now.
  4. Review the terms. Before you sign up, click the Terms of Service link to familiarize yourself with Medium's rules. If you agree, check the box next to "I agree."
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 4.jpg
  5. Click . It's at the bottom of the page.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 5.jpg
  6. Set up your Stripe account. You'll need to add a payment account to start receiving payments from Medium. Medium uses Stripe for this service. To set up payments:
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 6.jpg
    • Click Set up payouts on Stripe.
    • Enter your email address and click Next.
    • If you already have an account, enter the password. If not, enter a new password.
    • Enter all required information. Make sure to use your legal name, even if you use a pen name to write on Medium.[4]
  7. Submit your taxpayer information to Medium. You will not be eligible for payments until you submit your taxpayer info:
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 7.jpg
    • Go to https://www.medium.com/me/partner/taxes in a browser.
    • Choose whether you're an individual or paying taxes as a company.
    • Fill out the form and click Next.
    • You will receive a confirmation email from Medium once your information is approved. Once approved, you can start earning money on articles.
  8. Check your Partner Program Dashboard. The Dashboard, which you will find by clicking your profile photo at the top-right corner of Medium and selecting Medium Partner Program, is where you'll find a running total of your earnings.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 8.jpg
    • Medium sends payments monthly, usually by the 8th of each month. Depending on your bank, it can take 5-7 business days for your payment to appear in your bank account.
    • Earnings on the dashboard are updated daily.

[Edit]Making Posts Eligible to Earn

  1. Open your post on Medium. If you already created a blog post and want to make it eligible to earn on Medium, you'll need to put it behind the paywall.[5]
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 9.jpg
    • If you're not already signed in, sign in now.
    • If you're creating a new blog post, you can make your post eligible to earn as you publish it to medium. When you're finished composing, click Publish, which will bring up the Story Preview window. Then, check the box next to "Meter my story so it is eligible to earn money" and click the green Publish now button.
  2. Click the three-dot icon . It's at the top-right corner of the story. A menu will expand.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 10.jpg
  3. Click . This opens your post for editing.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 11.jpg
  4. Click the three-dot icon . It's at the top-right corner of the page.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 12.jpg
  5. Click . Now you can choose whether you'd like to allow or remove monetization.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 13.jpg
  6. Check the box next to "Meter my story so it is eligible to earn money." This ensures that the post is placed behind Medium's paywall, which is how it can generate money.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 14.jpg
    • Readers without paid Medium subscriptions can still read several paywall stories per month before needing to purchase a membership. This will not affect your earnings.
    • If a friend isn't able to subscribe to Medium but still wants to read your paywalled story, you can share it with them directly using a friend link.[6] Just click the three dots at the top-right corner of the story and click Share Friend Link.
  7. Click the button. Your post is now behind Medium's paywall, which means all reads will now generate revenue.

[Edit]Writing Successful Medium Articles

  1. Get distributed by Medium. When you publish a post, it will appear on your personal profile page, in your followers' feeds, and in search engines. One way to expand your reach and make more money is to write articles that get noticed by Medium editors and are further distributed throughout the platform.[7] If the editorial team distributes your article on Medium, people who aren't already following your work can come across your story, giving you more opportunities to get paid. There's no surefire way to have your work distributed more widely, but here are the basic things Medium editors are looking for:
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 16.jpg
    • High-quality, well-written, error-free, easy-to-follow articles written with the reader in mind.
    • Stories that share new insights and perspectives, stir emotions, provide meaningful advice, and offer fresh takes on familiar issues.
    • Honest and factual, supported with trustworthy sources.
    • Contains no clickbait, advertising, or content that violate's Medium's rules.[8]
  2. Perfect your headlines. Your headline should not only give readers context about the story, but also help them decide whether the story is worth reading.[9] What makes your story unique? Include that in the headline so readers choose your story over others. Be direct, focus on what's interesting, and use a fresh, clear voice.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 17.jpg
    • A clickbait headline may encourage someone to click your link, but unless your story delivers on the headline's promise, the reader won't engage with your story for long, and probably won't return.
  3. Optimize your stories for search engines. A great way to bring more views to your stories from search engines is to focus on search engine optimization (SEO). Setting a proper SEO title and description, using effective tags, including at least one image (with alt text), and easy-to-read formatting are all factors that can help your posts appear at the top of peoples' Google and Bing search results.[10]
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 18.jpg
  4. Write about popular and trending topics with a unique perspective. Fresh ideas about familiar or trending topics can really drive up your readership. The key is to offer takes that are original rather than reframing other peoples' ideas in new ways. No matter how popular a topic is, nobody wants to read the same ideas more than once. Consider your topic, do some research on what others have already said, and make a list of new approaches that can make your work stand out.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 19.jpg
  5. Teach your readers something new. What can you teach people that can improve their lives? Make the way they do things a little easier or more enjoyable? Consider the value your words can add to peoples' lives and use your platform to share knowledge.
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 20.jpg
    • If explaining a step-by-step process, test your process thoroughly, and make sure the organization is easy to follow.
    • Use valid sources whenever possible—it adds to your credibility.
  6. Submit your best work to Medium publications. Any Medium user can create a publication, invite other writers, and create their own virtual magazine. Some (but not all) Medium publications also pay their writers for stories, meaning that you can make even more money submitting your work to those publications. As a Partner, you'll receive a newsletter once per month containing submission opportunities for some of Medium's most widely-read publications, so keep an eye out for that.[11]
Make Money Writing on Medium Step 21.jpg
    • Medium also hosts some official Medium-run publications (all open for submissions) including LEVEL (a men's magazine), ZORA (for women of color), and Elemental (science-backed health and wellness).
