How to Make Lip Balm

Posted: 05 Jan 2022 12:00 AM PST

You honestly can never have too much lip balm, especially during the cold of winter when your lips are dry and chapped. It's kind of expensive though, which can become a problem if you go through a lot of it or tend to lose the tiny tubes in your car, purse, couch cushions, washing machine, etc. (It happens to all of us). Luckily, making your own lip balm is way more affordable, plus you get to choose exactly what ingredients go into it, so it's like having your own custom lip moisturizer. Lip balm is super easy to make, too! Check out the steps below to learn how.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Using Petroleum Jelly

  1. Place 2 tablespoons (28.3 grams) of petroleum jelly into a heat-safe bowl. This will serve as the base for your lip balm. Try to use the original, plain, unflavored kind of petroleum jelly. The kind that is already tinted and colored is actually lip balm!
Make Lip Balm Step 1 Version 8.jpg
  2. Melt the petroleum jelly in the microwave. Heat the petroleum jelly for 30 seconds. Give it a quick stir, then heat it for another 30 seconds. Keep heating it at 30-second intervals, stirring between each one, until the petroleum jelly is liquid. The petroleum jelly should be clear, with no lumps or clumps. This will take about 3 to 4 minutes total.[1]
Make Lip Balm Step 2 Version 8.jpg
  3. Add some color and/or shimmer, if desired. This step is completely optional. It can make your lip balm double-up as a lip stain or lip gloss. Choose one of the additions from the list below, then stir it into your lip balm base.

    • Use crushed blush or eye shadow to add color. A smidge of lipstick will also work.[2]
    • Add color and shimmer with cosmetic-grade glitter or mica powder. You can also use edible shimmer dust meant for cake decorating.[3]
    • Add color and flavor with powdered drink mix. Be aware that it may not dissolve very well.
    • Lip balm usually has more color than regular chapstick.[4]
  4. Add ¼ teaspoon of coconut oil for extra nourishment. You don't have to do this, but it will help make the lip balm more nourishing. It will also give the lip balm a nice, subtle scent and flavor.

  5. Add flavor with extracts, essential oils, or powders. Again, you don't have to do this, but it's a nice way to take your lip balm to the next level. Add in a few drops of essential oil or extract; peppermint and spearmint are great choices! You can also try a flavored drink mix or cocoa powder instead.
Make Lip Balm Step 5 Version 8.jpg
    • If you are using a powdered drink mix or cocoa powder, keep in mind that this will change the color of your lip balm.
  6. Pour the lip balm into a small, clean, empty lip balm container. Choose a small, plastic jar with a screw-on lid. You can find such jars online in stores that sell soap-making supplies. You can also find them in art supply stores and supermarkets along the travel-size cosmetic items. Choose something that is about 1 inch (2.54 centimeters) in diameter. You have enough melted mixture to fill several such jars.

    • Mini mint tins work especially well for this as well!
  7. Wait for the lip balm to set. Set the lip balm down someplace where it won't be bumped. Leave the lid off, and wait for it to harden. This may take 1 to 2 hours, however.[5] If you are in a hurry, you can stick the lip balm into the fridge or freezer for 10 to 15 minutes instead.

[Edit]Using Beeswax, Oils, and Butters

  1. Set up a makeshift double-boiler. Fill a saucepan with 1 to 2 inches (2.54 to 5.08 centimeters) of water. Place a heat-safe glass bowl on top of the saucepan. If you don't have such a bowl, you can set a glass canning jar into the water instead. Don't turn the stove on just yet!
Make Lip Balm Step 8 Version 6.jpg
  2. Place 3½ tablespoons (52.5 milliliters) of a carrier oil into the bowl. A carrier oil is a liquid, food-grade oil. It serves as the base of your lip balm and both nourishing and moisturizing. You can use all one type, or a combination of different types. Great carrier oils and their uses include:[6]

    • Coconut oil smells and tastes great. It's solid at room temperature, but it melts quickly.
    • Olive oil is a great, easy-to-find oil. You likely have it at home!
    • Sunflower oil helps heal damaged skin.
    • Sweet almond oil is great for making lips silky-soft.
    • Rose oil makes your lips softer, hydrates them and smells nice.
  3. Add ½ tablespoon (7.5 milliliters) of another type of oil. You can use the same type of oil as before (coconut, olive oil, etc.) for a simple recipe. You can also use this opportunity to add a richer oil, such as:[7]

    • Apricot kernel oil is great for sensitive and/or mature skin.
    • Avocado oil is very rich and ideal for moisturizing dry lips.
    • Castor oil helps add a glossy shine to the lip balm.
    • Hemp seed oil helps condition lips.
    • Jojoba oil is great for softening and nourishing dry, chapped lips.
    • Pomegranate seed oil is another rich oil. It helps nourish dry, dull lips.
  4. Add 1 tablespoon (15 grams) of beeswax. Try to use shaved beeswax or beeswax pellets; they will be easier to melt. If you are a strict vegan, use ½ tablespoon (7.5 grams) of candelilla wax instead.[8]

  5. Add 1 tablespoon of solid butter. No, this is not the butter that you put on your toast. Solid butters are any type of oil that is solid at room temperature. You can leave them out if you want to, but they help make the lip balm more creamy. Great solid butters to use in lip balm include:[9]

    • Mango butter
    • Shea butter
    • Cocoa butter with a little bit more of your carrier oil. Note that this butter can be drying.
    • Kokum butter with a little bit more of your carrier oil.
  6. Melt the ingredients. Turn the stove on and set the heat to medium-low. Wait for the water heat up and for the ingredients to melt.

  7. Remove the bowl from the saucepan. Set it down onto a heat-safe surface and stir the ingredients together until the color is consistent. You do not want any streaks or swirls.
Make Lip Balm Step 14 Version 6.jpg
  8. Stir in 5 to 10 drops of essential oil, if desired. You can skip this step if you want to, but the essential oils will give your lip balm a nice fragrance and flavor. Not all types of essential oils are safe to use on skin, but the following types are:[10]

    • Vanilla absolute is sweet and delicious, like a pastry.
    • Peppermint or spearmint are cool and refreshing. You can use up to 16 drops.
    • Mandarin, orange (sweet), or tangerine are sweet and tangy.
    • Lemon or lime are safe as long as they are distilled and not cold-pressed.
    • Lavender and rose have a wonderful scent, but not everyone likes their flavor.
    • Clove, as long as it's used sparingly (1 to 2 drops)
    • Camphor or tea tree oil are great for cold sores, but must be used sparingly—only 1 to 2 drops.
  9. Pour the lip balm into small, clean, lip balm containers. You can buy them online from stores specializing in soap-making supplies. You can also find them in supermarkets, right alongside the other travel-sized items. Some container stores may also sell them. Look for something that is around 1 inch (2.54 centimeters) wide.

    • Make sure that the containers are clean.
  10. Wait for the lip balm to set. Place the jar down, cap off, some place where it won't be disturbed. Let it set and harden. This should take less than an hour. Depending on the size of your container, it may even take 10 to 15 minutes. If you are in a hurry, however, you can pop the jar into the fridge or freezer for a few minutes.

[Edit]Trying Other Recipes

  1. Make a healing, honey-flavored lip balm. Melt the beeswax half-way in a double-boiler. Stir in the coconut oil and a dash of honey. Let everything melt, then remove the double-boiler from heat. Stir in 2 vitamin E capsules and a few drops of essential oil (if desired). Pour the mixture into empty lip balm containers and let it cool and harden.[11]
Make Lip Balm Step 18 Version 6.jpg
    • 1 tablespoon (15 grams) beeswax
    • 1 tablespoon (15 grams) coconut oil
    • Dash of honey
    • 2 vitamin E capsules
    • Essential oil (optional)
  2. Get some lip plumping action with cinnamon essential oil. Melt the coconut oil and beeswax in a double-boiler. Add the vitamin E oil, honey, and essential oil. Pour the mixture into empty lip balm containers and let it harden.[12]
Make Lip Balm Step 19 Version 6.jpg
    • 4 tablespoons (60 grams) coconut oil
    • 1½ tablespoons (22.5 grams) beeswax
    • 2 to 3 vitamin E capsules
    • ¾ tablespoon (11.25 grams) honey
    • 15 drops cinnamon essential oil
  3. Add pumpkin pie spice to make a lip balm fit for Fall. Melt the almond oil and the beeswax in a double-boiler. Stir in the honey and the pumpkin pie spice. Pour the mixture into small, lip balm containers, and let it harden.[13]
Make Lip Balm Step 20 Version 6.jpg
    • 2 tablespoons (30 milliliters) sweet almond oil
    • 1 teaspoon beeswax
    • 1 teaspoon honey
    • ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  4. Use freeze-dried berries to tint and flavor your lip balm. Grind the strawberries or raspberries in a blender or food processor, then set them aside. Melt all of the ingredients in a double-boiler. Stir everything together. Pour the mixture through a fine, mesh strainer into empty lip balm containers, and let it harden, stirring occasionally. Discard anything caught in the strainer.[14]
Make Lip Balm Step 21 Version 6.jpg
    • 1 tablespoon (15 grams) beeswax
    • ½ tablespoon (7.5 grams) coconut oil
    • ½ tablespoon (7.5 milliliters) sweet almond oil
    • ⅛ teaspoon vitamin E oil
    • 2 to 4 tablespoons (14 to 28 grams) freeze-dried strawberries or raspberries
  5. Trade out beeswax for a crayon to get colored lip balm. Peel the wrapper off of a crayon and break it into pieces. Melt it in a double-boiler along with the coconut oil. Add in some essential oil, if desired. Pour the melted mixture into empty lip balm containers, and let it harden.[15]
Make Lip Balm Step 22 Version 6.jpg
    • 2 teaspoons coconut oil
    • 1 high-quality crayon
    • 1 to 2 drops essential oil (optional)
  6. Add rose petals for a touch of luxury. Melt all of the ingredients in a double-boiler. Stir everything together, then pour the mixture into empty lip balm containers. If you want to leave out the petals, pour the mixture through a fine, mesh strainer. Allow the lip balm to cool and harden before using it.[16]
Make Lip Balm Step 23 Version 6.jpg
    • 4 tablespoons (60 grams) beeswax
    • 2 tablespoons (30 grams) coconut oil
    • 2 tablespoons (30 grams) shea butter
    • 1 teaspoon sweet almond oil
    • 1 teaspoon coconut or vanilla extract
    • ¼ cup (56 grams) dried rose petals, crushed

[Edit]Tips

  • You can make multiple flavors/colors from one batch. Create the base first, then separate it into smaller bowls. Add in your desired colors, flavors, and fragrances, then pour it into lip balm containers.
  • Petroleum jelly will give you softer lip balm. Beeswax will give you firmer lip balm.
  • Decorate the lids on your containers with beads, shells, or rhinestones. Use a strong glue, such as E6000.[17]
  • If you don't have a double-boiler, prepare the lip balm in a wide-mouthed jar. Set the jar into a pot filled with a few inches/centimeters of boiling water to melt everything.[18]
  • Add some color and shimmer with edible shimmer dust. You can find it in the cake decorating section of a craft store.[19]
  • Mix and match drink mix flavors. You can use the lemonade flavor to lighten up a berry flavor and turn it from pinkish-red to a lighter pink.[20]
  • You can flavor lip balm with a candy-making flavor oil. You will need 1/4 to 1/2 dram. A small bottle of flavoring oil is typically 1 dram.[21]
  • If the lip balm did not turn out quite right, melt it over a double boiler. Add more oil if it was too hard, or more wax if it was too soft. Pour the melted lip balm back into its container, and let it set up again.[22]
  • Check craft stores and online suppliers for essential oils, butters, waxes, and lip balm containers.
  • For a quick and simple lip balm, simply apply coconut oil over your lips.[23]
  • Experiment with your favorite oils. As long as the basic ratio stays the same, you can swap out one oil or butter for another without changing the texture of the lip balm.
  • Petroleum jelly will only mix with other oil-soluble substances. Don't be surprised when some of your non-oil based substances form a separate layer.
  • It's best to keep the lip balm in the fridge, especially if it contains oils and butters.
  • For flavour, add either honey or sugar. If you don't add water with the sugar, though, your lip balm will be grainy.

[Edit]Warnings

  • Make sure that the containers you are using are clean. If they are dirty, you risk introducing bacteria into your lip balm, which could make you very sick.
  • If you add color from a makeup product, make sure it's safe for use on lips. Don't add nail polish or another product that contains chemicals that shouldn't be ingested. It is best to use edible color supplies used in cake decorating.

How to Love Reading

Posted: 04 Jan 2022 04:00 PM PST

In this day and age, many people do not read for pleasure. There are many reasons for this. Some may believe that reading takes too much time or effort. Others may never have enjoyed reading at school and can't imagine doing it for fun. Some may simply never have encountered an environment that fostered a love of reading. However, reading can greatly enhance your life experience, and there are ways to make it even more enjoyable, whether you do it frequently or just for school or work assignments. As George R.R. Martin, author of the Game of Thrones books, once wrote, "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies...The man who never reads lives only one."

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Finding the Right Reading Material

  1. Consider why you want to read. People read for a wide variety of reasons. Before you pick up a book, consider what you want to get out of reading. Some people like reading books that teach them new skills, from computer programming languages to skills for hunting or camping. Other people enjoy narratives, whether fictional or biographical, to transport them to other times, worlds, or situations. Think first about what you ultimately want to get out of reading.
Love Reading Step 1 Version 3.jpg
    • You are much more likely to learn to love reading if you connect with something that seems purposeful to you. If reading is just an exercise or something you feel you "should" like, it's not likely to have a meaningful impact.
  2. Identify what you want to read. Once you know whether you want to learn, be entertained, or something else entirely, you can narrow down types of books based on your answer. For instance, knowing you want an entertaining story alone doesn't narrow between poetry, literature, popular fiction, memoir, and other types of writing, all of which could provide an entertaining narrative.
Love Reading Step 2 Version 3.jpg
    • Try doing an internet search for popular books in the area that you've chosen. This can give you a list of suggestions where you might start.
    • Consult with your local librarian. Librarians are usually delighted to make reading recommendations. Once you know what you're "looking for" from your reading, ask your librarian if s/he knows of any books that might suit.
    • Talk with the employees at your local bookstore. Most people who work at bookstores love reading and love books. They can be a great source of recommendations. Chatting with people who are passionate about reading might even spark a little fire of your own!
  3. Consider the genre you think you'll most enjoy. You can narrow down reading choices even more once you've picked a general type of writing by considering the genre you want. If you've decided on popular fiction, for instance, you can choose between horror, science fiction, historical, fantasy, romance, mystery, or more realist books that take a less whimsical approach to their characters and settings.
Love Reading Step 3 Version 3.jpg
    • As another example, if you decide to want to read nonfiction history books, then consider the time period and subjects that most interest you. A book about D-Day in Normandy during World War II will obviously be a very different reading experience than a book about the politics of the Roman senate around the time of Julius Caesar.
  4. Sample the genre to find writers who click with you. Even within a particular genre, a particular writer's style might not work for you due to his/her particular voice. This can be due to when the book was written, the tone, the point of view, or a number of other reasons. If you don't like a book in the genre you think you should most enjoy, try to narrow down the reason why.
Love Reading Step 4 Version 3.jpg
    • For instance, if you decide you want to read horror novels, older novels such as Frankenstein or Dracula are going to read very differently than Stephen King or Clive Barker novels.
  5. Make connections between reading and other interests. You may feel very passionately about social issues or something else. Seek out books that connect to the issues about which you are passionate or that frame the issue in a wider context.[1]
Love Reading Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • Remember that you can read more than books, too. Look at print and online magazines, blogs, and other places to find other reading material.
  6. Put down books you don't like. People sometimes feel obligated to finish a book even when they don't like it. You'll develop an aversion to reading rather than a love of it if you try to slog through a 300-page novel that you don't like. Many books can start slow as they develop the setting and people/characters involved, but if a book hasn't hooked you within 50-75 pages, then there's nothing wrong with moving to another one.
Love Reading Step 6 Version 3.jpg
  7. Remember that reading is deeply personal. Reading isn't a competition. It's a deeply personal, highly subjective activity. There's no reason why you should feel guilty for not loving that award-winning novel everyone's talking about. Nor should you feel embarrassed if you truly love something that others may consider "lowbrow," like comics or romance novels. Read what you love, and don't compare yourself to anyone else. If you dont like one book, that doesnt mean you have to give up on reading! Just that you haven't found the book for you yet.
Love Reading Step 7 Version 3.jpg

[Edit]Developing a Reading Routine You Love

  1. Create or find a good reading environment. Find a place that is quiet, well-lit, and comfortable. You can even make a reading nook in your room. Constant distractions from the book in front of you can make it hard to concentrate, and no one likes reading the same passages over and over. Finding the proper environment in which to read can be just as important as finding the right book for many people.[2]
Love Reading Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • Sometimes, people may suffer from light sensitivity, which can cause headaches when you read. Avoid high-contrast print, glossy paper, and fluorescent lighting.
    • You don't have to read only at home, either. Check out the coffee shops, cafes, or bars in your area.
  2. Set times to read. Try to set aside time to read every day. Even if it just starts as ten minutes on a lunch break, twenty minutes on the bus, and fifteen minutes before bed at night, that's suddenly forty-five minutes that day you've spent reading.[3]
Love Reading Step 9 Version 2.jpg
    • You can even turn this into a little game with yourself. Set a daily goal for reading time and give yourself a reward when you hit it. Eventually, you may come to find reading is its own reward.
  3. Always carry a book with you. You never know when you might find a few extra minutes to read. Sitting in waiting rooms, commuting on public transportation, waiting at a restaurant for a friend to arrive, etc. are all situations where we tend to pull out our phones and send text messages or check Facebook. By having a book in your bag, you can help develop your love of reading.[4]
Love Reading Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    • If you have an e-reader, you'll be able to carry an entire library around with you. The choices are endless.
  4. Keep a reading list. Whether it's in a pocket notebook, a memo on your phone, or someplace else, try to keep a reading list of books you hear about that you want to read.[5] Remembering titles and authors is difficult and drawing a blank once you're at the bookstore or the library is frustrating. By having a list handy, you'll always remember what books sounded interesting.
Love Reading Step 11 Version 2.jpg
    • If you're at the library or bookstore and see a book that intrigues you, snap a photo of the cover. That way, you'll remember it for later.
  5. Track authors or series you enjoy. When you find an author whose style you love, try tracking down his or her other books. Even if the plot or subject of the author's other books doesn't necessarily grab you, loving a particular writing style can lead to enjoyment of books you might not expect. Try looking into the other books of an author you find yourself really enjoying.
    Love Reading Step 12.jpg
  6. Socialize around reading. Look into book clubs or reading groups that specialize in the books you enjoy. Reading can be more of a solo activity than watching movies or television shows, but it doesn't have to be. Books can be just as fun to talk about with others as other media.[6]
    Love Reading Step 13.jpg
    • Finding these groups locally isn't always easy, so remember to look online for reading communities as well.
  7. Try audiobooks. Sometimes school, work, or other obligations might not leave you as much time to read as you'd like. In these situations, try listening to audiobooks to still get your daily dose of books.[7] Even having books read aloud to you will still keep you involved and enthralled with reading during the period where you cannot pick up the actual book.
Love Reading Step 14 Version 2.jpg
  8. Visit your local library. Your tax dollars pay for libraries, and you can try out as many books as you would like for free (as long as you remember to return or renew them on time).
Love Reading Step 15 Version 2.jpg
    • Many public libraries even loan out e-books so you can read them from home.
  9. Visit the bookstore. Bookstores, whether the big chains or intimately used book shops, are also great places to browse if you prefer to own your books. Sometimes being surrounded by cases and cases of books is all it takes to reignite your passion for picking up a few new ones.

[Edit]Helping Children Learn to Love Reading

  1. Offer a choice. One reason many students and young people don't enjoy reading is that they feel it is always "required," and never a choice. If you can offer them a choice of reading that takes their interests into account, they're more likely to learn to love reading.[8]
Love Reading Step 17 Version 2.jpg
    • A choice of how to read can also be helpful. For example, in-class reading periods can be very helpful for some students, while others need to be at home alone in their rooms to focus.
    • A choice of what to read can help young people understand that reading doesn't always mean dry or boring. In addition to the classics, provide options such as magazines and comics.
  2. Provide an environment that fosters reading. If your home doesn't have many books or other reading materials, it will be more difficult for your child to see reading as something enjoyable that s/he could do even in leisure time. Keep interesting, fun books around your home.[9]
Love Reading Step 18 Version 2.jpg
    • Set a good example by reading yourself. If your children see you enjoying a good book, they may be more likely to pick one up themselves.
    • Try reading together as a family. Creating a positive association between reading and family fun time can help take the pressure off of young people to "perform" in their reading.
    • Create a "reading space," either in your classroom or your home. It should not have other distractions and should be a pleasant little retreat where the child can enjoy reading.
    • Use books as rewards. Offer to take your child on a trip to the bookstore to pick out a few new books as a reward for chores or good performance in school. Help your child see that reading can be something that's fun and rewarding.
  3. Encourage creativity. There's no reason that the story has to end when the back cover shuts. Encourage young people to engage with their reading creatively.[10]
Love Reading Step 19 Version 2.jpg
    • For example, you could encourage students or your own children to draw scenes from what they read.
    • Performing reading in funny character voices can provide extra drama to reading.
    • Ask questions about how children feel about the reading.
    • Encourage them to think about what might happen next in the story, or write their own continuation.
    • Ask them to create a movie poster highlighting what they think is the most important element from the book.
  4. Be supportive and encouraging. One reason children may feel uncomfortable reading is that they worry they don't understand what they read or will get the "wrong" answer. Be supportive and encouraging of young readers.
Love Reading Step 20 Version 2.jpg
    • Never tell a young reader that his/her opinion or interpretation is "wrong." Instead, ask the child how s/he came to this opinion. This will help her/him articulate how she formed her ideas and will help teach him/her about how to hone reading skills.
    • If a young reader tells you that s/he is having trouble understanding, be patient. Don't make the child feel stupid or ignorant for not "getting" the material. Instead, ask questions to find out where the confusion is, and guide the child into stronger skills.
    • Accept every comment, no matter how "wrong" or inaccurate it may seem, as a valuable contribution. Remember that it can be terrifying for young or inexperienced readers to even offer their opinions. If the idea is inaccurate or needs correcting, ask further questions about it rather than rejecting it out of hand.

[Edit]Tips

  • Many people decide they don't like reading because they found the books they had to read in school to be boring. Keep in mind that schools often want to regulate what students read, and the books they require by no means represent every kind of reading material available.
  • Read with a friend to talk about the book.
  • Try reading plays. This brings Shakespeare to many people's minds, but really you can read any play. It is quite a different reading experience and is enjoyable to many people.
  • For some people, reading a bit about the author's background helps. If you like books from a particular author, try to get some background information about the author. It will help you to make your reading more enjoyable and fun. It will also help you to have more information about the author, the way the books are brought into being and other different things.
  • Once you find your favorite things to read, be sure to occasionally branch out. You never know when you might find a new favorite.
  • Get suggestions from people you know who have similar tastes as you.
  • Remember not to limit yourself to just books. Keep in mind that there are countless magazines, newspapers, websites, etc. that you may love to read.

[Edit]Warnings

  • If you are reading for anything more than pleasure (such as researching or learning how to do something) keep in mind that many sources are not reliable. Many people regard school textbooks biased under certain circumstances as well.

How to Grow Lemon Trees Indoors

Posted: 04 Jan 2022 08:00 AM PST

Lemon trees are evergreen citruses with a pleasant aroma that produce tart, yellow fruits. Although lemon trees grow best outdoors, they can be grown inside as well if given plenty of care. By meeting your tree's needs as it grows, you can help it adapt to its indoor environment. Before you know it, your lemon plant will be thriving and ready to harvest![1]

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Planting the Tree

  1. Pick Meyer lemon trees for growing indoors. Meyer lemon trees are the best and most adaptable tree for growing inside. They produce plenty of small or medium fruits and their maintenance level is more friendly for beginners.[2]

    • Pink variegated lemon trees also grow well indoors and are beginner-friendly.
    • Buy a lemon tree at least 2-3 years old, as young trees may not grow as well indoors. Although you can grow lemon trees from seed, they are less likely to adapt to indoor climates and will not produce the same as their parent tree.[3]
  2. Choose a deep plastic pot for your lemon plant. Plastic pots are ideal for lemon trees so you can move the plant around as the seasons (and light sources) change. Look for a plastic pot with plenty of depth to help your tree balance as it gets larger and produces fruits.[4]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 2 Version 3.jpg
    • The pot depth determines how large the lemon plant can grow. About is the minimum recommended pot size.[5]
    • Choose a pot that has drainage holes to prevent your plant from getting waterlogged.
  3. Find a saucer large enough to fit beneath the container. Place a few pebbles or gravel on the saucer and add a little water before placing the container on the saucer and the pebbles. The water-filled saucer will help maintain a trace amount of humidity around your tree.[6]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 3 Version 3.jpg
    • You can cut a strip of landscaper's cloth and place it at the bottom of the pot to keep it from leaking dirt into the saucer. Replace the cloth when you transplant the tree so you don't clog the hole.
  4. Buy a slightly acidic potting mix for your tree. Lemon trees grow well in peat moss mix because it is mildly acidic and well-draining. Buy it or another acidic, well-draining soil mix from a nearby garden center or plant nursery.[7]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 4 Version 3.jpg
    • Soils meant for cacti will also work well for citrus trees.
  5. Find a sunny spot for your lemon tree to grow.[8] Lemon trees grow best when they have at least 8-12 hours of direct sunlight. Choose a spot by a window where your plant will get direct sunlight all day.[9]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 5 Version 3.jpg
    • If you're in a location that doesn't get a lot of sun, set up a grow light near the plant and leave it on for up to 12 hours a day.
  6. Take the lemon tree out of its nursery pot and spread its roots. Massage the roots with your fingers, gently pulling them apart with your hands. This will help its roots spread faster get more nutrients and water from the soil.[10]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 6 Version 3.jpg
    • Pull carefully to avoid damaging or breaking off the roots.
  7. Fill the pot halfway with soil mix. Before planting your lemon tree, add about 1/2 of the soil mix to your pot and smooth it over until even. This will help your lemon tree's roots grow into the soil and help it stay upright as you place it in.[11]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 7 Version 3.jpg
  8. Place the lemon tree in the pot. Position it upright in the pot and fill the rest of the pot with soil. Press the soil around the plant's base down, making sure that no roots are left exposed and out of the soil.[12]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 8 Version 3.jpg
    • Bury the tree at the same level as it was in the older pot.
    • Avoid covering the trunk with soil, as this can cause fungal infections.
  9. Water your tree immediately after planting it. Moistening the soil will help make it more habitable for your plant as it adapts. Water the tree until the soil is damp, but not soaked or waterlogged.

[Edit]Caring for Lemon Trees

  1. Water your lemon tree weekly. If your lemon tree doesn't get enough water, the natural salts that it produces may accumulate in the soil. Keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged to prevent root rot.[13]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 10 Version 4.jpg
    • If using hard tap water, you may need to drop the water's pH before giving it to your tree. Adding 1 tablespoon (15 milliliters) white vinegar to 1 gallon (4 liters) of water will usually do the trick.
    • If your tree's leaves are curling, your tree needs more water.
  2. Keep the air around your plant circulated. To imitate outdoor conditions, open a door or window near your plant in warm weather. If the air is too cold, set up a rotating fan near the lemon tree to help the air stay well-ventilated.[14]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 11 Version 4.jpg
  3. Fertilize your plant once every few months. Lemon trees grow well if they get plenty of nitrogen—you can find nitrogen-rich fertilizers at most plant stores. Feed your plant once every 3 weeks in spring or summer and once every 6 weeks in fall and winter.[15]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 12 Version 4.jpg
    • An NPK fertilizer of 2-1-1 works well for citrus trees.
    • Do not use fertilizers containing alfalfa meal or cottonseed meal. Fertilizers containing these meals can cause fungal diseases.
  4. Perform only mild pruning on your tree. Pruning too many leaves will reduce your yield, but occasional pruning can be helpful. Remove dead, broken, and diseased branches, and thin to control the height and spread of your tree as space allows.
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 13 Version 4.jpg
    • Lemon trees can be pruned year-round when grown indoors.[16]
  5. Set up a humidifier near your lemon plant. Lemon trees naturally grow in humid climates. Placing a humidifier near the tree can keep the air from getting stale. Set the humidifier to at least 50% to give your plant enough moisture in the air.[17]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 14 Version 4.jpg
    • Misting your lemon tree with water several times a week or when it rains can also restore the plant's humidity levels.[18]
    • If you live in a humid location, you may be able to get enough humidity from opening a door or window.
  6. Manage the temperature of your room to ensure a healthy harvest. These trees do best in rooms with an average temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21.1 degrees Celsius) by day and 55 degrees Fahrenheit (12.8 degrees Celsius) at night. While temperatures that dip below 55 degrees Fahrenheit (12.8 degrees Celsius) will not kill your tree, they will cause your tree to go into dormancy and stop growing.

[Edit]Harvesting Lemons

  1. Pollinate your lemon tree with a paintbrush. Because your tree won't have insects to spread its pollen around, you'll need to pollinate the plant manually for it to grow fruit. Rub the paintbrush against the plant's stamen and anthers, the pollen-covered buds around the middle of the plant's flowers. Transfer the pollen to the pistil, the bulb located deep in the center of the flower.[19]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 16 Version 4.jpg
    • Repeat this process once a day to ensure pollination. Most lemon trees take 6-9 months to harvest after being successfully pollinated.[20]
    • Your lemon tree may produce fruit even if you don't pollinate it, but the fruit will be larger if it is pollinated.[21]
  2. Thin out any heavy lemon clusters that grow. Once a cluster of small lemons appears on your tree, remove 2/3 of them to allow the remaining 1/3 a chance to grow large. Snip away the extra lemons with pruning shears, cutting carefully at the stalk.
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 17 Version 4.jpg
    • Too many lemon clusters can drain your tree of energy and stunt all of the fruits' growth.
    • Many trees will drop fruit on their own. Wait a few months before removing any fruit.
  3. Test the fruits for ripeness with your thumb. As your lemons grow, apply pressure with your thumb to the rind. If the inside feels soft and plump instead of hard, the plant is ready for you to harvest.[22]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 18 Version 4.jpg
    • The fruits can be left on the tree for awhile without becoming overripe.
    • The fruits will usually stop growing once they're ready to harvest. They should also be a rich yellow color.[23]
  4. Cut your lemons from the tree with pruning shears. Take the pruning shears and clip them off of the tree at the fruit stalk. If you don't have pruning shears, you can also carefully pull the lemon from the tree.[24]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 19 Version 4.jpg
    • Pull or cut gently to prevent damaging your plant.
  5. Store your lemons for 1-2 months on your kitchen counter or in your fridge. After harvesting your lemons, you can store them for 2-4 weeks on a counter and 1-2 months in a refrigerator. Avoid cutting your lemons until you're ready to use them, as cut lemons only last for 2-3 days in a fridge.[25]
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 20 Version 4.jpg
    • If you want to store your lemons for longer, squeeze the juice and store it in an airtight container for 4-6 months in a fridge or freezer.
  6. Prune your plant's roots if it stops producing lemons. Your tree should remain root-bound in order to keep its size in check, but some potted lemon trees will stop producing fruit if their roots get too pot bound. Remove your tree from its pot and use a sharp knife to shave 1/2-inch to 1-inch (1.27 to 2.5 centimeters) of the roots around the exterior of the root ball.
Grow Lemon Trees Indoors Step 21 Version 4.jpg
    • Keep the roots moist while you walk by spritzing them with water from a spray bottle.
    • Repot the tree and prune approximately 1/3 of its foliage to balance out the pruned roots.
