How to Stretch Suede Shoes

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 08:00 AM PST

You can easily stretch shoes, even if they're made of the famously finicky fabric suede. A suede-safe stretching spray will do the trick if you just need a bit of a stretch. For tougher jobs, invest in a stretching tool designed for shoes, heels, or boots. If you have trouble, or you're worried about damaging expensive shoes, consult a shoe repair specialist.

EditSteps

EditUsing a Spray Solution

  1. Try a spray solution to stretch your shoes 1/4 to 1/2 a size. Spraying your shoes then wearing them for a few hours is a quick fix. If you only need to stretch them 1/4 to 1/2 a shoe size, a spray could do the trick.[1]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 1.jpg
    • Spray solutions are also your most affordable option.
  2. Purchase an immediate-use solution marked for suede shoes. There are plenty of stretching products available online or at shoe care stores. To avoid damage or discoloration, look for one labelled specifically for suede. Some are designed to be used overnight with a shoe stretching tool, so go for one marked for immediate use if you want to skip the stretching tool.[2]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 2.jpg
  3. Spray the inside of your shoes lightly. Spray a light, even coat on the inside of your shoes. If necessary, use your fingers or a clean cloth to reach the nooks and crannies and to spread the solution evenly.[3]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 3.jpg
    • Check your product's instructions, as some sprays should be applied to the outside, too.
  4. Wear your shoes for a few hours. There's no need to walk around, so you can just sit at your desk and get some work done while your shoes mold to your feet. For a little more stretch, you can also put on a pair of thick socks before slipping on your shoes.[4]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 4.jpg
  5. Repeat the process if necessary. If they're still tight after a few hours, or for thicker shoes and boots, you might need to repeat the process once or twice. You can use most products as many times as you need without damaging your shoe.[5]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 5.jpg
    • However, if you've tried spraying and wearing your shoes twice with no luck, chances are you'll need a stretching tool.
    • Check your product's instructions to make sure it's safe to use several times. Some sprays aren't meant to be used more than once in a short period.

EditTrying a Shoe Stretcher

  1. Invest in a shoe stretcher that fits your needs. You can find a variety of shoe, high heel, and boot stretcher designs online.[6] They're typically sold individually and come in size ranges for men and women.
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 6.jpg
    • If you need to stretch the leg of a boot, there are stretchers that expand the shaft.[7]
    • You can also find stretchers with attachments that make extra room for bunions.[8]
  2. Spray the shoes with a shoe stretcher solution. Some shoe stretchers come with a spray solution. If yours doesn't, or if it's not specifically marked safe for suede, purchase a solution labelled for overnight use with a shoe stretcher. Check your product's instructions, and spray your shoe as directed.[9]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 7.jpg
  3. Insert the stretcher and turn the handle to tighten it. Insert the end of the shoe stretcher that looks like a foot, and locate the handle on its other end. Turn the handle clockwise until it fits tightly into the shoe.[10]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 8.jpg
    • If you only have one stretcher, you'll have to stretch one shoe at a time.
  4. Turn the handle 3 to 4 times after the stretcher is tight. When the stretcher fits snugly into the shoe, you'll encounter resistance as you turn the handle. Once it feels tight, turn the handle an additional 3 to 4 times to stretch the shoe.[11]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 9.jpg
  5. Remove the stretcher after 24 to 48 hours. Turn the handle counterclockwise to loosen it, then take it out of your shoe. Try the shoe on and, if necessary, repeat the process. If the fit is good, and if you only have one shoe stretcher, spray and stretch your other shoe.[12]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 10.jpg

EditStretching Shoes Safely

  1. Don't expose real suede to extreme heat or cold. Some DIY hacks for stretching shoes include using a blow dryer or placing bags of water in shoes and freezing them. Extreme temperatures aren't good for suede, so don't try these hacks. In addition, you can't control how much bags of water expand as they freeze, so they might tear your shoes.[13]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 11.jpg
  2. Check your soles to see if they'll prevent stretching. There's a limit to how much you can stretch heavy work boots and other shoes with thick soles. In addition, soles made of heavy plastic, rubber, and other tough materials will get in the way. Even a professional would have trouble, and might be able to expand them by 1/4 to 1/2 shoe size at most.[14]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 12.jpg
  3. Avoid using a stretcher on a shoe with a narrow design. Whether they're flats or heels, you have to be careful about stretching shoes with narrow toes. You might be able to safely stretch a pair by a fraction of a shoe size if you spray them and wear them. However, using a stretcher might contort their shape permanently.[15]
    Stretch Suede Shoes Step 13.jpg
  4. Consult a professional if you're worried about damaging your shoes. You might want to think twice about stretching your shoes yourself if they were expensive, delicately designed, or have thick, plastic or rubber soles that could interfere with stretching. When in doubt, look for a local cobbler or shoe repair specialist.[16]

How to Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 12:00 AM PST

Singing demands a lot of lung capacity, so breathing exercises are essential for even the most experienced singers. Since breathing properly will help protect your singing voice, start by making sure your technique is solid. To fill your lungs completely, inhale through your nose and fill your belly with air without raising your shoulders or chest. Try inhaling and exhaling for various counts to exercise your diaphragm. In addition to breathing exercises, aerobic exercise is a great way to gain lung capacity, so start walking, jogging, biking, or swimming at least 30 minutes per day.

EditSteps

EditBreathing Properly

  1. Stand up straight with your shoulders back. Your shoulders should be back, but not raised, and your chin should be parallel with the floor. Keep your feet shoulder width apart and your knees loose instead of locked. Your chest shouldn't be puffed out, but it should be naturally lifted so your belly can expand.[1]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • Proper posture will allow you to fill your lower lungs with air. When most people breathe, they just fill up their upper lungs.
  2. Inhale through your nose and fill your belly with air. Breathe in slowly through your nose as you count to 4. Hold your hand on your belly to make sure it expands and fills with air. When you've finished inhaling, hold your breath for a 4 count.[2]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 2 Version 2.jpg
  3. Keep your upper chest and shoulders still as you inhale. Your chest shouldn't puff out and your shoulders shouldn't rise as you inhale. As your belly gets round and your lungs fill with air, your lower ribs should expand outward, but don't let your chest and shoulders rise into a shrug.[3]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 3 Version 2.jpg
  4. Count to 4 as you exhale through your mouth. After counting to 4 as you hold your breath, breathe out by flexing your abdominal muscles. Try to exhale evenly for a 4 count. Instead of blowing out lots of air at first, try to exhale in a steady stream.[4]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 4 Version 3.jpg

EditTrying Breathing Exercises

  1. Increase each of your counts as you practice proper breathing. The easiest breathing exercise is to simply inhale, hold your breath, and exhale for longer counts. First, increase your count to 5, then 6, and eventually work your way up to 10. Do 3 or 4 sets of inhales, holds, and exhales for each count.[5]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • Make sure to maintain the proper breathing techniques by filling your belly and keeping your shoulders down for this and any other exercise.
  2. Decrease your inhale counts and increase your exhale counts. Inhaling for a shorter count and exhaling for longer is great exercise for your diaphragm. Start by doing a few sets of 6 count inhales and 8 count exhales. Proceed to counting to 5 as you inhale and to 10 as you exhale, then gradually work your way up to inhaling for a 2 count and exhaling for a 20 count.[6]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 6 Version 3.jpg
    • Work on filling your lungs with air in a shorter amount of time and controlling your exhale to blow out in a steady stream for a longer amount of time.
  3. Exhale very slowly as if you were blowing through a thin straw. For this exercise, imagine there's a candle in front of your face. Your goal is to blow out so slowly and gently that your breath doesn't make the candle flicker. Fill your lungs with air, then exhale through your imaginary straw until you empty your lungs.[7]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • Repeat this exercise 10 times.
  4. Add letters and sounds as you exhale. Start adding vocalizations to your breathing exercises. Say "B," "F," "S," and "Sh," as you exhale. Extend the sound throughout your entire exhale by saying, "Beee-," or "Esss-."[8]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • Try mixing up your counts for this exercise. Inhale for a 4 count, exhale for 8, then inhale for 2 and exhale for 6. Randomize your counts to mimic how you'd have to switch up your breathing during a song.
  5. Introduce tone by humming as you exhale. Hum at a note in your middle register as you exhale. You can also try pronouncing syllables, like "Ba," or "La." Extend the sound evenly as you exhale: use your breath to keep the tone and volume steady throughout your exhale.[9]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 9.jpg
    • Once again, try switching up your inhale and exhale counts for this exercise.

EditGetting Healthy and Cutting Bad Habits

  1. Try walking, jogging, and biking. Aerobic exercise is essential for singers, so get out there and put your legs and lungs to work. You should aim for 30 minutes daily, but it's especially helpful to exercise on rehearsal days. The easiest and most affordable forms of aerobic exercise are walking, jogging, and biking. [10]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 10.jpg
  2. Start swimming laps. If you have a nearby YMCA, community pool, or body of water, try to swim vigorously for 30 minutes. While it might take more effort and money to get to a pool or lake, swimming is the ideal form of exercise for singers. Water's density makes your muscles do extra work, and holding your breath between strokes improves your breath control.[11]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 11.jpg
  3. Take up yoga or a martial art. Yoga is great for singers, as it improves breath control, focus, and coordination. Tai Chi and other martial art forms can also help you develop a sense for the connections between breath, energy, and concentration.[12]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 12.jpg
    • You can look for yoga and Tai Chi videos on YouTube and other services. You could also look for a local studio and sign up for classes.
    • Yelling is a part of some martial art forms, so ask your instructor if you can skip the screaming to preserve your voice.
  4. Stay hydrated. Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. Dehydration can wear out your vocal folds.[13]
Increase Your Lung Capacity for Singing Step 13.jpg
    • Cool or lukewarm water is better than ice cold water, especially right before or during rehearsal. Cold water reduces your ability to precisely control your vocal folds.
  5. Quit smoking. Smoking decreases your lung capacity and damages your vocal folds (better known as vocal cords). If you smoke anything, do your best to quit. In addition, try to avoid being around secondhand smoke.[14]
