How to Clean Makeup Brushes

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 08:00 AM PST

If you wear makeup often, you've probably noticed that your makeup brushes tend to get a little dirty after a few uses. Cleaning your makeup brushes will help keep your skin clear and your makeup application flawless. Try cleaning your brushes quickly after every use and doing a deep clean about once a week to keep your brushes in tiptop shape.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Spritz your brushes with rubbing alcohol after every use.

  1. Cleaning every day can help keep your brushes germ and bacteria-free. After you use any of your brushes, spray a bit of rubbing alcohol onto the bristles of your brush, then gently wipe it on a clean cloth. Leave the brush out to dry before you use it again.[1]

    • You can find rubbing alcohol at most drug stores or pharmacies.
    • If you're really worried about germs on your makeup brushes, consider investing in a makeup brush sterilizer. This machine uses a UV light to disinfect your brushes in minutes, leaving them 99.9% germ-free.

[Edit]Deep clean your brushes once a week.

  1. Using dirty makeup brushes can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. If you use your brushes often, try to clean them thoroughly every 7 to 10 days. Your skin will thank you![2]
Clean Makeup Brushes Step 2 Version 8.jpg
    • This is especially true for foundation and concealer brushes, since those are usually coated with thick layers of makeup.

[Edit]Wipe off excess makeup with a clean cloth.

  1. This is the first step in the deep cleaning process. Before you get to deep cleaning, grab a paper towel or a clean hand towel and give your brush a good wipedown, handle and all. You'll probably be surprised at how much makeup comes off with this quick once over, and it can really make your cleaning job easier.[3]

    • Try swirling your makeup brush onto a paper towel a couple of times to remove all the excess makeup.

[Edit]Run the bristles of the brushes under lukewarm water.

  1. As you rinse, keep the bristles pointed downward. This will help avoid the water running back and into the center of the brush, which can dissolve the glue that holds the brushes together. Move and separate the bristles to really penetrate into the center of the brush.[4]
Clean Makeup Brushes Step 4 Version 9.jpg
    • Stick to lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water can damage the bristles on your brush over time, especially if you clean them often.

[Edit]Mix warm water and of shampoo.

  1. You can use baby shampoo or clarifying shampoo. Fill up a bowl or a shallow dish with water from the sink, then mix in your shampoo of choice. Your measurements don't have to be exact, but make sure there's enough water to cover the bristles of your brush.[5]

    • You can also use makeup cleansers or detergents, but shampoos work just as well.
    • While some makeup experts recommend using dish soap for its degreasing properties, others warn that the harsh soap could dry out your bristles over time.

[Edit]Add olive oil or coconut oil if your makeup is oil-based.

  1. You only need about of oil to help clean your brush. If you use an oil-based foundation or concealer, mix in of olive oil or coconut oil along with your water and shampoo. The oil will help break down the makeup much easier, leading to a cleaner, fresher brush.[6]

    • This is a great way to cleanse natural brushes to keep them in tiptop shape.

[Edit]Swirl each brush in your mixture.

  1. Try to get a good lather going for the best results. This should only take around 20 seconds. You'll probably notice the water getting cloudy or dirty as the makeup comes off your brush, which is a good sign![7]

    • If your brush is really dirty, swirl it around in the palm of your hand to work up a lather. This will help agitate the bristles more, which can lead to a deeper clean.

[Edit]Rinse the brush under warm water.

  1. Continue massaging the bristles to really clean them off. Keep the brush pointed downwards so the water doesn't run back into the handle, and keep rinsing until all of the soap or shampoo is completely gone. Don't worry if your brush isn't completely clean yet—you'll still have a chance to cleanse it further.[8]
Clean Makeup Brushes Step 8 Version 8.jpg
    • If the water runs completely clean, your brush is good to go! You don't need to cleanse it again.

[Edit]Shampoo the brush again if it's still dirty.

  1. Thick makeup might be a little tricky to get out. If your brush needs it, empty out your dirty bowl and fill it back up with warm water and shampoo. Swirl the brush around again, then rinse it using warm water.[9]
Clean Makeup Brushes Step 9 Version 7.jpg
    • For most brushes, cleaning it a second time will be enough for a thorough cleansing. But, if your brush isn't completely clean after a second shampoo, feel free to keep washing it until the water runs clear.

[Edit]Squeeze out excess water.

  1. Make sure your brushes aren't dripping wet. Use your hands or a clean paper towel to gently squeeze the bristles until they're damp. Don't wring or rub the brushes, as that could damage the bristles.[10]

    • While the brushes are still dripping wet, try not to tilt them upwards so the water doesn't run into the handle. After you pat them dry, you can be a little less cautious about this.

[Edit]Lay your brushes out flat to dry.

  1. Put a clean towel down to catch any extra moisture. Hang the tip of the brush off the edge of a counter or a table so the bristles dry normally instead of flattening out. Try to keep the brushes lying flat until they're fully dry to prevent any water damage to the handle or the glue inside.[11]
Clean Makeup Brushes Step 11 Version 6.jpg
    • Depending on the size and thickness of your brushes, they could take a few hours or a full day to dry.
    • Although it might seem like a good idea, don't use heat to dry your brushes! Hair dryers can damage and warp the bristles on your brushes, especially if they're synthetic.

How to Make a Sub Sandwich

Posted: 03 Feb 2022 04:00 PM PST

A submarine sandwich, also known as a sub, is a very popular meal found all over the place. Although commonly ordered at a pizza or sub shop all it takes is the right ingredients to make one right at home!

[Edit]Steps

  1. Start off with a sub roll or a roll of bread cut down the middle. White and wheat are common bread choices although others exist. You can either cut through the entire bread lengthwise or cut through and keep the back to better keep the insides in.[1]
Make a Sub Sandwich Step 1 Version 3.jpg
  2. Spread the bread with a condiment of your choice. Mayonnaise, miracle whip, mustard, bbq, and hot sauce are all popular choices. You can also save this for last or only spread on top/bottom half.[2]

  3. Add the meat of your choice. Ham, turkey, chicken, bacon, and egg/chicken/tuna salad are popular options for lunch.[3] You could try meatloaf or grilled chicken for dinner or steak and/or eggs for breakfast subs.[4]

    • You can also cut out meat entirely for a veggie sub.[5]
  4. Add cheese on top of the meat or on the top slice of bread. American, cheddar, and swiss are popular but any would work.

  5. Toast your sandwich if wanted. You can toast it in an oven or heat up the meat/cheese only and then add it to the bread.[6]

  6. Add vegetables. Onions, tomatoes, peppers (banana/bell/Jalapeno), lettuce, spinach, sprouts, olives, pickles, cucumbers, and mushrooms are all popular options.[7]

  7. Add final touches. Salt and pepper, oregano, garnish, oil, and vinegar are popular options.

  8. Close the sub. Being careful to tuck all the ingredients into the sandwich close the bread.

How to Move on from the Past in a Relationship

Posted: 03 Feb 2022 08:00 AM PST

Moving on from a past relationship can be raw and emotional, whether or not you were the one who ended things. But in the wake of all those emotions, letting go of the past can help you grow, get in touch with yourself, and even open your heart to new lasting love. We've put together a guide to help you move on from past love and heal. Here's how you can start to let go.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Acknowledge your emotions.

  1. Give yourself time to process any feelings related to the past. Try to label your emotions as they come, either by journaling or simply saying how you feel out loud.[1] If you want to cry, scream, or shout, that's okay, too. You won't feel this way forever, but accepting your emotions without judgment will let you move on in a healthy way.[2]
Move on from the Past in a Relationship Step 1.jpg
    • However you feel is valid and real.[3] The feelings of grief and rejection that can come with separating from a partner actually activate the same area in your brain as physical pain, but know that the pain is temporary.[4]

[Edit]Remember both the good and the bad.

  1. Romanticizing past partners can make it hard to move on. Often, you might hold onto an imaginary future you envisioned with an ex rather than seeing the reality of the relationship. Think back on all the love and wonderful experiences you shared with your partner. At the same time, recognize your former partner's flaws and any problems, fights, and pet peeves from your relationship.[5]
Move on from the Past in a Relationship Step 2.jpg
    • Comparing past relationships to present relationships makes it easier to be critical of potential new partners. By remembering the reasons why you and your ex broke up, you can open yourself up to new people and possibilities.[6]

[Edit]Make a commitment to forgive and let go.

  1. Forgiveness makes it easier to move on from negative emotions. While it's normal to think back again and again on the past, at a certain point, it's healthier to commit to changing your thought patterns.[7] Acknowledge your partner's role in any past hurt, and acknowledge any hurt you might've done to them. Then, though it can be tough, make the choice to forgive your partner and forgive yourself.[8]
Move on from the Past in a Relationship Step 3.jpg
    • Use forgiveness as a turning point to refocus on yourself and what you need in the future, rather than what you want to change in the past.[9]
    • You don't have to reach out to your partner in order to forgive them. Forgiveness can be a personal process and mindset shift, too.

[Edit]Create space between yourself and your ex.

  1. It's hard to let go when you see reminders of your past relationship. Try not to contact your ex, either in real life or on social media. You can unfollow them, block their number, and delete old pictures of the two of you. It might also help to box up any mementos of your relationship, like gifts and old photos.[10] If your ex reaches out to you, let them know you need time and space to heal and process.[11]
Move on from the Past in a Relationship Step 4.jpg
    • Similarly, it's important to stay away from physical intimacy with an ex if you want to move on and form healthier stable relationships.[12]

[Edit]Reach out to friends and family.

  1. Social support can help you through tough times. It's easy to feel lonely as you try to move on, but know that you're not alone. Try to connect with friends and family face-to-face and share how you're feeling with them.[13] Call up a friend you haven't talked to in a while.[14] You can also join a community organization or local club to make new friends and build connections.[15]
Move on from the Past in a Relationship Step 5.jpg
    • If reaching out to people doesn't come naturally to you, that's okay. You can find a built-in, supportive community by joining a local or online support group.

[Edit]Prioritize your health and well-being.

  1. Create new routines to take care of yourself and your body. As you let go of a past relationship, healthy routines can create stability, even when it feels like a major part of your life has changed.[16] Start by setting a time to sleep and wake up every day. Then, reinforce healthy habits by aiming for 30 minutes of exercise, eating a healthy diet, and keeping up good personal hygiene.[17]
Move on from the Past in a Relationship Step 6.jpg
    • Treat yourself to a massage, a spa day, or even a night at home with tasty snacks and your favorite movie.

[Edit]Reconnect with your interests and independence.

  1. As you move on from the past, you have a huge opportunity for growth. Maybe you've always wanted to try out Brazilian jiu-jitsu or take a cooking class. You might've dreamed about traveling to Rome or volunteering at an afterschool program. Use this time to re-invent how you think and feel about yourself and your capabilities.[18][19]
Move on from the Past in a Relationship Step 7.jpg
    • Try making a list of everything you want to do. Aim to cross 1 item off that list every day.[20]

[Edit]Ask yourself what you've learned from the past.

  1. Use this time to learn what you want and need from future relationships. Despite all the hurt, your past can still have a positive and meaningful impact on your future.[21] Is there anything you want to do differently moving forward? Sit down and write out a few goals or strategies for future relationships.[22] Here's a list of questions to help you reflect:[23]
Move on from the Past in a Relationship Step 8.jpg
    • What role did you play in any past relationship conflicts?
    • Do you see any trends in your past relationships or choice of partners?
    • How do you react to stress and conflict in relationships?
    • What traits do you want in a future partner? What traits do you want to avoid?

[Edit]Treat yourself with kindness and compassion.

  1. Catch your inner critic and focus on positive, hopeful statements. Look out for thoughts that use absolutes like "never" and "always." Similarly, watch out for self-blaming statements that use words like "should've" or "must." As a good test, check if the way you're talking to yourself is how you'd talk to a friend or loved one.[24] When negative words come through your head, spin them into encouraging statements.[25]
Move on from the Past in a Relationship Step 9.jpg
    • Rephrase a negative statement into a mantra like, "I deserve love, and I'm going to find someone incredible."
    • Give yourself credit for trying, even if you aren't perfect (none of us are). For instance, "The relationship didn't work out, but I gave it my best shot."[26]
    • If you make a mistake, change a self-blaming thought with language like, "I messed up a little, but that doesn't mean I'm a bad person or a bad partner."

[Edit]Be patient with new relationships.

  1. Take your time to heal and ease into new relationships. It can be tempting to jump into a rebound relationship, but take time to process your emotions and connect with yourself before you start dating again. By focusing on what makes you happy and rediscovering parts of yourself that you might have lost in the past, you can form more authentic relationships moving forward.[27]
Move on from the Past in a Relationship Step 10.jpg
    • There's no set amount of time to wait before starting a new relationship.
    • Typically the longer you were together and the more involved you were in each others' lives (ex. living together, raising kids together), the longer you'll need before falling in love again.[28]
    • You'll know you're ready to be a committed partner again when you know what you want from a relationship and know what you can give in a relationship.[29]

[Edit]Open up to the possibility of new love.

  1. There's more than one person out there for you. Even though it may not feel like it now, you will find someone and you can fall in love again.[30] Your next partner might not be exactly who you expect or check every box. To keep an open mind, try to come up with the 3 traits that are most important to you in your future partner.[31]
Move on from the Past in a Relationship Step 11.jpg
    • Your 3 traits can be about personality, appearance, or other characteristics. For instance, you might want a future partner who's dedicated to community service, athletic, and who shares your religion.
    • Research shows you can still have a healthy, fulfilling relationship even if you haven't completely resolved feelings towards your former partner.
    • In fact, getting into a new relationship after you've taken time to work on yourself can help you move on.[32]

[Edit]Seek out counseling if you need more support.

  1. Everyone needs extra help from time to time. Talk to your primary care physician for a referral to a therapist or look for an online counseling service like Better Help or Talkspace.[33] If your feelings about the past start to get in the way of daily life, that could be a sign of depression or anxiety.[34]

How to Make a Paper Basket

Posted: 03 Feb 2022 12:00 AM PST

Paper baskets are useful around the house and make great gifts. They can be made using materials you already have and are a fun and easy craft for any age. Develop your basket-weaving skills and experiment with the shape, size, colors, and appearance of your baskets to add another level of creativity.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Simple Construction Paper Basket

  1. Prepare strips of paper to weave your basket. Use three sheets of 8.5" x 11" construction paper. On the sheet of paper to become the base of your basket, draw a horizontal line from the top and another one from the bottom. These lines will help when laying out the base. Then cut the paper lengthwise into strips .5" wide.

Make a Paper Basket Step 1 Version 8.jpg
    • Choose one sheet of a neutral color of construction paper like brown, black, or white. This will be the base of your basket. The other two sheets can be any color of your choice. This will form the decorative sides of your basket.
  2. Weave the base of your basket. Lay out 8 strips of paper (the color you've chosen as the base) next to each other so that the lines on each strip are face up and form one continuous line. Starting at the top line, weave another strip of the same color through the strips you've laid out, over one strip and under the next. Center the strip horizontally with respect to the strips you laid out. Using another strip of the same color, weave it through the strips in the opposite way from the first one, so that this one will go underneath the strips that the first one you weaved went on top of. Then slide the strips together, making sure the edges line up.

    • Repeat with a total of eight strips.
    • The finished base should have a 4" x 4" woven square that fits just inside the lines you drew on each strip. In other words, you should have a square that has eight strips sticking evenly out 3.5" on each side.
  3. Fold up the strips sticking out the sides of the basket. Each side should come up to the same height.

    • It can be helpful to put a 4" x 4" box or block of wood in the center of your basket and fold the strips up against this block. This will make the next steps easier.
  4. Weave a strip of colored paper between the now vertical strips of the base, folding it to fit around the corner of the basket.

    • You will need to use approximately one and a half strips to make it all the way around the basket. You can simply tape or glue the two pieces together. Try to place the connection so that it comes on the inside of the basket and is hidden by a strip from the base. This will give your basket a clean, seamless look.
    • Weave the strip all the way around the basket. When the two ends meet, tape or glue them together, hiding the tape in the same way.
  5. Repeat the above step with another strip of the same color. Make sure to alternate between going under and on top of strips, so that you create a checkerboard pattern with the strips from the base.

    • Keep repeating until you reach the top.
  6. Finish and polish off your basket. Tape or glue the ends of the base strips to the top woven strip. Then tape or glue a slightly wider strip of the base color to the top of the basket on the inside, laying it on top of the vertical strips. Add a similar panel on the outside of the basket, securing it to the inside one as well as the outside of the basket.

    • If you want to add a handle, simply tape or glue each end of a long strip of paper to opposite sides of the basket before you add the top panel.
  7. Done.

[Edit]Circular Newspaper Basket

  1. Roll newspaper into tubes. First, cut a sheet of newspaper into quarters vertically - this does not have to be precise. Then place a wooden skewer at one corner of a sheet of paper. Place it at a slight angle so that the rolled tube you will end up with is longer than the sheet of paper itself. Then roll the paper around the dowel, making sure to keep it tight. Once you have finished rolling, put a drop of glue on the last corner to hold the roll together.

    • You will need many tubes of paper, so repeat this process for each.
    • In place of a wooden skewer, you can use a thin knitting needle, a 3mm dowel, or anything similarly long, narrow, and round.
  2. Use a circular piece of cardboard to form the base. This can be as large or small as you want your basket to be. Glue paper tubes to the cardboard so that they radiate away from the center in rays. Make sure to use an odd number of tubes for this.

    • You will need to use more rays for larger bases. The closer together the rays are, the tighter your weave will be.
  3. Use a second piece of cardboard, identical to the first, to finish the base. Glue this piece of cardboard to the first so that the paper tubes are firmly pressed between the two pieces.

    • Leave a heavy weight on top of the base while it dries to make sure that everything is nice and secure.
  4. Fold the rays up and begin weaving. Fold a new paper tube over one of the rays and glue the folded end to the working end. Then weave the tube in and out of the rays, over one and under the next. Make sure it sits snug as far down as possible - at first on the base, and later, on top of previously woven tubes.

    • As you weave, the rolled tubes will flatten out. This will make your basket stronger.
  5. When you come to the end of one tube, attach it to the next one by sliding its end inside the next tube. This will essentially make one long tube that will form your whole basket.

  6. Continue weaving until you near the top of the rays or reach the desired height of your basket. When you're ready to stop weaving, fold the end of the tube you're weaving with over a ray and glue it to itself.

  7. Fold over the rays to finish the basket. Cut each ray about an inch past the top of the basket. Then:

    • For each ray that stands on the outside (the last tube you wove past the ray went to the inside of the ray), fold the end over the basket and glue it to the inside of the basket. Use a clothespin to hold it in place while the glue dries.
    • For each ray that stands on the inside (the last tube you wove went outside the ray), fold the end over the basket. Instead of gluing these to the outside, tuck the end inside the woven basket at the second row from the top, securing it in a way that makes it fit into the weave of the basket.
  8. Done.

How to Play Subway Surfers

Posted: 02 Feb 2022 08:00 AM PST

Subway Surfers is a fun endless runner game available for Android, iPhone, and iPad. This tutorial will show you the basics of playing the game, how to add friends from Facebook, and how to get high scores and lots of gold coins!

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Playing the Game

  1. Swipe up to jump. This lets you jump over obstacles and collect coins in the air. You can't jump high enough to get on the top of a train unless you have the Super Sneakers powerup.
Play Subway Surfers Step 1 Version 2.jpg
  2. Swipe down to roll. You'll need to roll to get under low obstacles.
Play Subway Surfers Step 2 Version 2.jpg
  3. Swipe left and right to switch lanes. Switch lanes to avoid trains, walls, and other obstacles.
Play Subway Surfers Step 3 Version 2.jpg
  4. Double-tap the screen to hop your hoverboard. Your hoverboard allows you to collect more coins and will protect you from a crash.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 4.jpg
  5. Collect coins to purchase hoverboards and upgrades. Coins are scattered throughout the levels, and you'll need to move quickly to collect as many as possible.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 5.jpg
  6. Collect glowing powerups for boosts. There are four different powerups that you'll come across while playing:
    Play Subway Surfers Step 6.jpg
    • Jetpack - Makes you fly above the train track and lets you grab additional coins.
    • Super Sneakers - Makes you jump higher.
    • Coin Magnet - You'll attract any nearby coins without having to touch them.
    • 2x Multiplier - Doubles your current score multiplier (e.g. x3 now becomes x6).

[Edit]Surviving a Run

  1. Use ramps to reach the top of trains. You'll see ramps on the ends of some train cars. Use these to reach the top of the trains, where you can collect more coins and avoid obstacles.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 7.jpg
  2. Time your movements. When you swipe to move, your character will still take a moment to get over. Make sure you're leaving enough time to get out of the way of approaching obstacles.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 8.jpg
  3. Switch lanes while in midair or mid-roll. You can swipe to change lanes at any time, even if you're in midair. Try to plan ahead so that you end up exactly where you want.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 9.jpg
    • If you're on the left or right lane, you can swipe twice in midair to move across both lanes in one jump.
  4. Jump and then immediately roll. Rolling during a jump will cancel the jump animation and keep you on the ground. This can be very helpful for getting coins on the top of trains and to keep you from jumping too far with Super Sneakers.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 10.jpg
  5. Use a hoverboard to avoid a crash. A hoverboard will prevent you from any crash, so it's best top save them until right before you need one. If you're about to hit a train or a wall, double-tap the screen to use one of your hoverboards.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 11.jpg
    • Hoverboards cost 300 coins each, but you'll often get them as rewards as well.
    • Save your hoverboards for your really good runs to maximize your score. Don't waste them to avoid a crash at the start of a run when you can just start over for free instead.

[Edit]Getting Lots of Coins

  1. Tap the Shop button on the main menu. The key to getting a lot of coins is to upgrade a few important powerups. You can do this from the Shop menu.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 12.jpg
  2. Scroll down to the Upgrades section.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 13.jpg
  3. Spend your coins to upgrade the Coin Magnet and Jetpack powerups. Improving these two powerups will lead to many more coins in the long run.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 14.jpg
  4. Complete the Daily Challenge. Each time you complete a daily challenge, you'll receive a reward. Oftentimes this is a significant number of coins.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 15.jpg
    • To view the Daily Challenge, tap the Daily Challenge button at the top of the main menu.
    • You only have until the timer runs out to complete the Daily Challenge and earn the reward.
  5. Complete the Daily Challenge on consecutive days. Each day in a row that you complete the Daily Challenge, you'll get a more impressive reward. By completing five days in a row, you'll earn a Super Mystery box, which can contain a whole lot of coins. You'll get a new Super Mystery Box for each Daily Challenge you continue to complete in a row.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 16.jpg
  6. Complete Missions. While completing a mission will not directly result in coins, reaching Multiplier 30 will result in Super Mystery Boxes as mission rewards. These can contain a lot of coins, so try to complete as many missions as possible.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 17.jpg
    • To view your current missions, tap the Missions button on the main menu.
  7. Consider purchasing the Double Coins boost. This costs $4.99, but is a one-time purchase that will permanently double all of the coins you earn. You can find this at the top of the Shop menu.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 18.jpg

[Edit]Adding Friends

  1. Open Subway Surfers. This app icon looks like a stylized version of "Subway Surfers."
    Play Subway Surfers Step 19.jpg
  2. Tap the tab. It's at the bottom of your screen and looks like shadows of multiple people.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 20.jpg
  3. Tap . The app will link to your Facebook account and connect with your FB friends that also play the game, giving you 5,000 coins.
    Play Subway Surfers Step 21.jpg
    • You can revisit this "Friends" tab to check their progress; for every 50 runs they complete, you get 350 coins.
    • From this screen you can also see your Friends' stats, so you can try to beat their high score.

[Edit]Tips

  • Try to avoid the super sneakers powerup, as they can do more harm than good!
  • Double tap 2 times and you will get the hoverboard.
  • Buy boosts because they're helpful and may be needed.
  • If you've played Temple Run before, then it's easier for you to learn how to play Subway Surfers.
  • You can't jump from the rails to the top of trains unless you have the Super Sneakers.
  • You can skip the mission you are stuck on by buying a skip mission.
  • You can buy different boards and characters in the "me" bar on the front screen.
  • If you forget how to play, there is a tutorial option on the main menu.
  • There are different characters on Subway Surfers, so you can buy new ones if you have enough coins.
